What do you think about The Terminator (1984)?

I liked this film a lot, and i think it's one of Cameron's best (i would say he's a great director, who made some very fun films, and he's good at creating action scenes).

There's something about this film, which is very interesting though: the dark and grim atmosphere and Arnie playing a villain.

Thoughts?

Welcome to the human race...
Easily my favourite Cameron film and one of my all-time favourite films.

Great film, and easily the best of the franchise.

I like it quite a bit. If there is one weakness to the movie, is perhaps the third act feels a bit short, as the Terminator just finds them at a hotel, then you have the big chase, and that's it for a climax. But other than that, it's very good, so just nitpicking at that point.

It's hard to say if it's Cameron's best because I really like T2 and Titanic as well, but hard to put those 3 in order.

Victim of The Night
I think it's great.
And I think a part of that is that Cameron wasn't a big deal yet, and American directors almost always seem to be better before studios throw a bunch of money at them and people stop saying "No" to them (the Coppola/Lucas/Spielberg/Scorsese Effect), and I think another is that the early 80s (as opposed to about '85 or '86 on) had some real grit to them left over from the 70s but applied to things like Science Fiction and Horror where people experiment a bit more. For me, this is largely what's missing from T2.

It's definitely my favorite of the franchise. I like T2 quite a bit, but I've always preferred the darker tone of the original. Despite having Schwarzenegger star in it, I think it manages to avoid feeling like a Hollywood film/a product of entertainment and it instead maintains a gritty vibe that the rest of the franchise wasn't able to capture, imo.

With that being said, The Abyss is still my favorite Cameron film.

This was the best Terminator movie in my opinion. It's more dark and even a bit horror like.

It's a near-perfect little movie. It's like Back to the Future. The effects don't hold up as well today (shocker, right?), but the story is tight. It's the best version of Cameron's "action movie as a backdrop for a love story" (or is it the other way around?). There is no time-travel tale without paradox, but this one, at least, is a nice closed loop.

Both T1 and T2 are in my top ten list.

I was first in my street to have a surround sound system, a Sony Pro Logic set up, so neighbours quickly became curious about it.
A little old lady from a few houses down wanted to see what all the fuss was about so I sat her in front of my TV and put the opening sequence of T1 on, the bit where the Terminator turns towards the front and starts shooting roared out of the speakers, the subwoofer kicked out some deep bass and the old dear just about stopped herself from sh*tting her big pants.
Funnily enough she didn't want to come in and watch anymore films after that?

My wife has a similar attitude towards surround sound. She grew up with the usual old TV that had one speaker, and not a very good one at that. I tried getting her to see/hear what all the commotion is about, but it was just too much for her.

btw: what's the best porn movie for surround sound? Something that really works the sub-woofer would be perfect for when her sister comes over to gossip.

I'd say one of the old German ones from the seventies, the music on it will say it all.
