My Top 100 list & Tell Me Yours

I envy you, L.B.J...I usually watch new movies.

Mischief. Mayhem. Soap.
I don't generally watch new releases, although it's difficult to always rent older movies as well.

As my video store is small, I generally stick to the festival/foreign section which seems to have the best titles, although, occassionally I'll rent something from general that's appealing.

I actually made my list a really long time ago and have been making revisions ever since. I even made one the other day, Doctor Zhivago is my new 67.

sades- the old movies may have been the first and original, there just not half as entertaining as 75% of todays movies.

*gasp* Are you serious? See what I mean??? If we don't go back and rent the old ones...I swear, American youth are going to get so spoiled rotten on visual effects. I'm just glad I'm old enough to know I SHOULD be watching the classics, and I remind myself everytime I go to rent a new release and everything is crappy. I go grab an oldie.

I still stand by my statement, but i do think that not enough of america's youth are watching the greats, ill admit, even I havnt seen more than half of the AFI list-
but i am doing something to help- i go through and pick directors, i already did polanski, Kubrick (didnt get a chance for a clockwork orange, and waited till i finished the book for 2001), and Coppola. Now i am on david lean. Hitchcock is next.

[The Matrix]
""my Substitute for this flick goes to DARK CITY which I consider to be a whole lot better.""

I haven't seen it. I know there was a lot of hype given to The Matrix, but I think it earned it. I can't say that about most films. I think it is a watermark film that will be remembered for boosting the DVD era.

[T2]
""While I know a lot will not agree part 1 intrest me more plus arnie as a bad guy was pure genius on camerons part. Originality play a good deal to my liking as well.""

I like T2 better because the effects just seem fresher. It has some amazing action sequences in it that may never be duplicated in their ferocity.

""I guess it's safe to say that Scorsese is your hero. 3 Intresting choices in there Casino The King of Comedy and Cape Fear. but my choices look nothing like yours which usually is the case when it comes to my dear friend Scorsese and me (Age of Innocence,New York,New York,Mean Streets,Taxi Driver,Goodfellas,Casino,After Hours, Raging Bull ruffly in that order).""

I haven't seen NY, NY or Age of Innocence. Mean Streets I just didn't care for. It seemed too amateurish when compared to his other works. I guess I haven't seen After Hours, either.

[Evil Dead]
""I dig it, but I founded the sequel to be much more in my taste and humor.""

I try to stay away from gore movies with too much humor in them. It just puzzles me that no one wants to make a horror film that takes itself seriously anymore.

[Magnificent Seven]
""One of the best Popcorn Adventures ever made. I also take it more serious than just popcorn and do like it more than Kurosawa's Seven Samurai.""

It is a fine Western. I find it to be more entertaining than The Wild Bunch.

""The Pink Panther movies are great and the original takes a back seat to Return of the Pink Panther. Peter Sellers is my fav comedic actor. The First one is also really campy do you fell the campyness of it, just wondering if it's just me.""

Definitely campy. The humor was, IMO, kind of ahead of its time.

[Salem's Lot]
""Tobe Hooper's Poltergeist and remake of Invaders From Mars I likes more, I haven't really seen too much of his stuff thou.""

It was a very scary film. A lot of viewers thought it was kinda cheesy. I think it is a creepy, atmospheric horror film.

[Star Wars trilogy]
""I can tell from this that your list was made off the top of your head. Return is the only one that really choaks my chicken the wrong way. Empire over New Hope as well in my opinion.""

I just had to include all three of these. They must be seen as an entire film, moreso than perhaps any other trilogy. Return is cheesy in some parts, but it is still a lot of fun.

[Take the Money and Run]
""Yes Yes Yes great editing great script and dialogue very fast pace as well one of his lesser know or thought as great films.""

This is when his humor was actually very funny; before he got "sophisticated" and started creating romantic comedies. This is a hilarious pseudo-documentary. Perhaps the pre-cursor to Spinal Tap and Waiting For Guffman.

[The Indian Runner]
'''I know I mentioned this to you before so now I'm wondering if you've had the chance to watch either or both of Sean Penn's movie The Crossing Guard & The Pledge.""

I haven't seen either one. I have heard some really bad things about The Crossing Guard. Do you recommend both of these films?

[The Fly]
""Just watch the original a couple of days ago and yeah Cronenberg is the champ.""

The Fly is just great. That whole scene about the "insect politics" is unnerving.

[Red Rock West]
""Definatly doesn't get mentioned enough give Kill Me Again a try I like it just a bit more done by the same director.""

Haven't seen it. Have you ever seen Bound? If so, what did you think of it?

[Predator]
'''I can't argue again it's in the same field as Die Hard as beinginng one of the best action movie ever constructed. by the way what do you think about HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER.'''

I would have to see THFRO again. I only saw it once and don't remember too much of it.

[Body Double]
""If you like this one than rent everything De Palma's done before and just after and you won't be dissapointed.""

Casualties of War (1989)
Untouchables, The (1987)
Scarface (1983)
Blow Out (1981)
Dressed to Kill (1980)
Carrie (1976)
Obsession (1976)
Phantom of the Paradise (1974)
Sisters (1973)

The Untouchables was okay. I am not a big fan of Scarface. It's kinda like the comic book version of Scorsese's mafia films. Blow Out was okay. Believe it or not, I have never seen Carrie. I haven't seen the rest. I like Body Double because it was just a very blatant imitation of Hitchcock. He made no bones about it, and it was just pure fun, and very suspenseful.

[My Bodyguard]
""I really like to know about this movie could you tell me??""

You remember this, LB. The kid in high school (Chris Makepeace) tormented by a bully (Matt Dillon). So the kid makes friends with the new kid everyone is afraid of (Adam Baldwin). They think he killed his little brother, but it was just an accident. It is a terrifically charming film, and at times very poignant. It is one of my favorites from my childhood. I saw it again very recently, and was delighted to see that it still stands up. You need to see it.

Haven't seen it. Have you ever seen Bound? If so, what did you think of it?
Not in my taste, I can say that it didn't do it for me. Give me JADE,BASIC INSTINCT or WHAT! anyday over this. I place it somewhere close to WILD THINGS or SLIVER maybe a bit above but definatly not as bad as FAIR GAME or THE TEMP.

Peace

Actually I'm compiling a liust right now for a different forum , but I'll post it here too.

No one's embarrassed about something for any reason other than what others will think of it; hence, he becomes embarrassed over his taste in movies AFTER he learns that others find it comical. Ain't hard to follow.

I’ve always thought it was great people have different tastes… just think what a boring place it would be if we all liked the same things…

Lord Slaytan,

You have some very fine choices in that list.
