The MoFo Director Fan Clubs!

Tools

Are you a particularly HUGE fan of a certain director? Well, then this is the place to "out" that. I'll keep a list in this first post of many different directors and their MoFo fans.

You can be part of AS MANY fan clubs as you want (you just have to post it here), but try to be strict enough (you should at least have seen most of their films and have a few favorites amongst them). Maybe you could write a little about your love for their films or tell us which of their movies you've seen and which are your favorites!

The purpose of this list is to see which members have which cinematic sympathies. It's also a way to determine which directors are popular on this forum and which are not.

Members of a certain fan club can also decide to give their fan club a special name if they want to or they can appoint a Fan Club President.
The President's duty is to promote their director on the forums and to defend their filmmaker in discussions!

RULES:

- It is OBLIGATORY to write a little bit about why you want to join or found a certain fan club. It doesn't have to be more than 2 lines if you don't want to put too much effort in it, but there has to be some sort of explanation.

- The people who want to become president have to write a small piece on why they think they deserve to be the president of that particular fan club. Put some work into it!

- If you're not pleased with the current president of your Fan Club and if you think you would be a better one, you have the right to challenge your president for a 'SHOWDOWN'.

- The fan clubs have to keep the full name of the director in their names.

Cobpyth's Movie Log ~ 2019

As you can see, I already founded a few fan clubs and joined them. They're all directors that I've seen (almost) everything from and whose films I absolutely ADORE.

I'd like to join/found The Billy Wilder Fan Club (only seen 8 of his 26 feature films yet), The Robert Altman Fan Club (only seen 8 of his 35 feature films) and a few others in the future, but I feel like I have to explore their filmography a little bit more before I do that.

Add me to the Andrei Tarkovsky, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Stanley Kubrick and Guillermo del Toro fan clubs. I'd like to be in the Ingmar Bergman (my favorite director), Luis Bunuel, and Werner Herzog fan clubs, all three are in my top five fave directors, but I haven't seen all their movies. I also really like Bela Tarr, but I've only seen one of his movies.

I'm going to be adding myself to some soon. And to me it doesn't matter if you've seen everything. That's just an added bonus.

What happens if you join? Do you get a t-shirt?
That depends on which fan clubs you're part of and who the Presidents of those fan clubs are. Some may offer special luxuries for their members.

It's not a requirement to have seen ALL of their films. It's entirely up to you. If you feel you have seen enough of their work (and love most of it), you should join!

2022 Mofo Fantasy Football Champ
For now, I'd like to be on Hitchcock, Wilder, Eastwood, and Scorsese

I'll do mini posts on their filmographies I've seen when I'm back from Vegas.

^ Added!

I also added myself to the Robert Altman and Billy Wilder club anyway.

From the 8 films I've seen from Altman 6 are on my top 101 list! From the 8 films I've seen from Billy Wilder 5 made my top 101 list and another one would have probably made it if I had seen it before I composed the list. Both directors also had a film that was a strong contender.

I guess there's no way both of them could ever lose their respect from me.

Limiting it to only directors where I've seen and rated 10+ movies:

Yasujiro Ozu - Because he is the greatest filmmaker ever No-one has been able to so consistently create simple but effective movies with characters that I care about.

11 movies @
- (average)

Ingmar Bergman - I'm not sure any director has ever made me "think" more than Bergman. In terms of the themes he tackles and how they relate to me.

11 movies @
(average)

Martin Scorsese - Perhaps the director I have loved the longest.

13 movies @
(average)

Quentin Tarantino - A director who started making movies at the time that I started caring about them and whose films seem to have "matured" along with my tastes.

10 movies @
(average)

Lars Von Trier - The director who most tests what I like and where my boundaries are ... just like art should

12 movies @
- (average)

Wong Kar Wai - The director that showed me that there is a big wide world outside of my previously narrow experience and that movies are an art form that can truly move me - and he helped me meet my wife in a roundabout way

11 movies @
- (average)

Great idea Cob. I'll add myself to a couple tomorrow because I want to write a little about why I love them.

I thought long and hard the past couple of days how I could talk about my favorite directors a bit more. Cob made it easy for me.

2022 Mofo Fantasy Football Champ
Alfred Hitchcock

My journey with Alfred Hitchcock only began about 4 years ago. The first film of his that I saw was Rear Window, and I was blown away by it on the first viewing. The fact that he could make a film that had one setting for the whole film and make it that thrilling and engaging is nothing short of magnificent. I can see the profound effect that he's had on directors that are working today. Shortly thereafter I saw Dial M for Murder. Another great film watching experience. After that I remember going on a tear of watching his movies, and I haven't seen many that I would classify as bad, just a few that I felt weren't on the level of some of his other works. I have a long ways to go. A part of me feels sad when I watch another Hitchcock because for me I like to have those new experiences of his films in my back pocket. Of course after watching them I always ask myself why I didn't see his films sooner as well, so it really goes both ways. The major ones that I want to see next are Shadow of a Doubt, The Lady Vanishes, Lifeboat, Marnie, Blackmail, and The Trouble With Harry.

What I like best about Hitchcock is his detail to attention and his climatic scenes that he builds up, such as the Psycho shower scene, the scene where the birds are out on the playground in the birds, the crop dusting scene in North by Northwest, the merry go round scene in Strangers on a Train, the Wine Cellar scene in Notorious. And my favorite scene, when Thorwald breaks into L.B. Jeffries apartment.

He's also well known to bring the best of his women in their roles, be it Ingrid Bergman, Joan Fontaine, Eva Marie Saint, or Grace Kelly, among others.

Tier 1 Hitchcock (Masterpieces)
Rear Window
North by Northwest
Psycho
Dial M for Murder

I already talked about how Rear Window is the essential perfect Hitchcock film, and these other three I would also consider masterpieces. North by Northwest is as fun of a movie experience that I've had. Psycho gets stronger with me upon each repeat watch, it really is a perfect horror film. It birthed a genre in it of itself. Anthony Perkins was legendary and the film has little flaws. Dial M for Murder is the most intricate of all of his films, and is a performance driven piece, with Milland and Kelly at the helm. All 4 of these are very thrilling films, each for their own separate reasons.

Tier 2
Vertigo
To Catch a Thief
Notorious
Strangers on a Train
The Birds
Rebecca

All really good films in their own right. Fringe top 100 picks and all around great films. I really need to rewatch some of these, particularly To Catch a Thief (I love the Cary Grant and Grace Kelly combination) and Strangers on a Train (another great performance piece, especially from the villain). Rebecca was,one of the film black and white films that I had ever seen. Hitchcock is the master of creating a villain, and Mrs. Danvers is the prime example for that.

Notorious feels like film noir for me. I love how solid Hitchcock and Grant pair together. You always get a great film when these two are grouped together.

Tier 3
Rope
Frenzy

I like both of these, but I still enjoy tier 2 slightly more.

Tier 4
The 39 Steps
The Man Who Knew Too Much

I don't enjoy these as much because they aren't as great as his other films, but still better than a lot of films that are out there.

In conclusion, I hem and haw back and forth with my number 1 and 2 director, but right now I feel Hitchcock is my favorite. Truly the master of suspense (and the thriller genre in general).

Chappie doesn't like the real world
I want in a few of these. Bergman, Del Toro. Wilder, Von Trier, Hitchcock, Paul Thomas Anderson and Wes Anderson.

Most importantly I want Pedro Almodovar added.

Chappie doesn't like the real world
Oh yeah, Bob Fosse and Francis Ford Coppola. I really like Sofia Coppola too. I don't know what happened with her last film, but I love everything else she's done. Add her as well, please.
