Welcome to the MovieForums Top 100 of the Aughts (the 2000s!) Countdown!

The 100% OFFICIAL bona-fide, certified list of films released in the years between 2000 and 2009, as voted for by our distinguished members.

88 ballots were submitted, almost all of them at full capacity (25 entries). According to the MoFo record-keepers, that's the third most ballots submitted among all the MoFo countdowns, so thanks to each and every one of you that took the time to submit a ballot. That makes this list *yours*.

The Voters: Tugg, John W Constantine, MovieFan1988, mrblond, Guaporense, Nope1172, Steve Freeling, The Rodent, Hey Fredrick, donniedarko, Torgo, sumantra roy, Harry Lime, Citizen Rules, TheUsualSuspect, SpelingError, Allaby, Thursday Next, ahwell, Skepsis93, KeyserCorleone, Takoma11, Wooley, kgaard, ash_is_the_gal, John Dumbear, GulfportDoc, Thief, Daakmore, Aidanc, ScarletLion, seanc, Captain Spaulding, PHOENIX74, edarsenal, Miss Vicky, thracian dawg, Deschain, John McClane, Fabulous, mattiasflgrtll6, Rockatansky, AgrippinaX, pahaK, MovieMeditation, Okay, John-Connor, Chypmunk, CosmicRunaway, ueno_station54, xSookieStackhouse, gomorra82, Holden Pike, mark f, resopamenic, rbrayer, Captain Terror, Diehl40, cricket, Kaplan, Wyldesyde19, Yomi, rauldc14, Yoda, Jinnistan, Frightened Inmate No. 2, ynwtf, Pussy Galore, crumbsroom, Cobpyth, ApexPredator, Taz, Siddon, dadgumblah, Jabs, gbgoodies, jiraffejustin, Iroquois, gandalf26, Sedai, beelzebubble, Death Proof, WHITBISSELL!, Derek Vinyard, CaptainT, JayDee, ScannerDarkly, sarah f

637 movies were voted for, with a lot of really great ones missing the cut. Always remember that this is just a snapshot of the collective preferences of the whole of MoFo, so don't sweat it if your favorites didn't make it, but rather take the opportunity to explore the ones that you haven't seen, and share your favorites that missed it.

So as we get ready for the countdown to begin, feel free to chime in with any prediction, tidbits and reviews as we reveal each film, or any healthy discussion about it. Just DON'T share your full list until the end.

Let's Go!

Acknowledgment: Other than every voter, I want to thank all of you for putting this burden on the n00b. With only a year here, that means you either trust me or you hate me. Still not sure Finally, I want to thank @Yoda for holding my hand so far. We're going to be here for a while, so I hope you don't mind me holding tight for a bit more.

The MoFo tradition is to honor the One Pointers. What are those? Well, those are films that received exactly one point, meaning that a single person had them in their last spot of the ballot (25th), with no votes from anyone else.

It is common for people here to use that spot to put the spotlight on a rather obscure film, a
"hidden gem", or just a bizarre nomination just for kicks. For this countdown we ended up with 38 one pointers, so brace yourself!
  • 49 Up (2005)
  • All or Nothing (2002)
  • An American Crime (2007)
  • Anger Management (2003)
  • Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner (2001)
  • Atonement (2007)
  • Bellamy (2009)
  • Beyond the Sea (2004)
  • A Bittersweet Life (2005)
  • Blade II (2002)

  • Bon Cop Bad Cop (2006)
  • Brand Upon the Brain! (2006)
  • Bubble (2005)
  • The Bucket List (2007)
  • The Cat Returns (2002)
  • Detroit Metal City (2008)
  • The Fog of War (2003)
  • Frida (2002)
  • Funky Forest: The First Contact (2005)
  • Harry Brown (2009)

  • Idiots and Angels (2008)
  • Jason X (2001)
  • Kung Pow: Enter the Fist (2002)
  • Lust, Caution (2007)
  • My Dinner with Jimi (2003)

  • This Is England (2006)
  • Wet Hot American Summer (2001)
  • World's Greatest Dad (2009)
  • Youth Without Youth (2007)

Here's another funny game. Try to guess who voted for what, as people claim their one pointers

Quick note: I plan to post the one-pointers in a minute, and start the countdown tomorrow. As usual, there are some technical mumbo-jumbo that Yoda has to complete now that the thread is live, but I expect this to be rolling tomorrow.

In the meantime, I'm gonna borrow an idea from @Thursday Next, from her Foreign Film Countdown... so what are your predictions/faildictions:

  • What will films #100 and #99 be?
  • Which director will appear the most times?
  • How many animated films will make it?
  • What year from the decade will have the most entries?

Have fun!

What will films #100 and #99 be?
#100 - The Road
#99 - Burn After Reading

Which director will appear the most times?
The Coens

How many animated films will make it?
My kids are grown and gone, no clue.

What year from the decade will have the most entries?
2006

Which director will appear the most times?
The Coens.

How many animated films will make it?
10

What year from the decade will have the most entries?
2007

What year from the decade will have the most entries?
2007
My thought as well.

I'm interested to see how many English language vs non-English language films there are, especially considering the semi-recent foreign language countdown.

That elusive hide-and-seek cow is at it again
Reserved too.
Maybe I can sell it on auction once this heats up.

Auction has CLOSED!

You haven't even sent a list tho, Minio.

.

My wild guesses:

What will films #100 and #99 be? The Incredibles (# 100) and Little Miss Sunshine (#99)
Which director will appear the most times? Scorsese
How many animated films will make it? 7
What year from the decade will have the most entries? 2007

#100 Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001)
*I just seen that for the first time a few weeks ago and if I hadn't sent my ballot in I would've voted for it.

#99
Probably some horror flick I'd never watch

Director who appears the most: Spielberg, wait a minute everyone hates Spielberg, at least the hipsters do What's the name of that director everyone thinks is the cat's meow? Yeah that one, he'll have the most movies make the list.

Surf's Up got four votes in the Animation Countdown and sneaked onto the list at #99 back in 2014, but it gets very little love around here.

I watch this movie at least once a year and it's one of my go-to picks to cure sadness or boredom. I love the characters and the concept and it's just so light-hearted and fun. I highly recommend it.

My Ballot:
25. Surf's Up (One-Pointer)
