Finished the
Season 4 - Volume 1 a bit late (I blame the NHL playoffs). It's definitely a step forward, a step backward situation (didn't rewatch the previous seasons this time, still considering a full rewatch before the
Volume 2, but I'd remember it's about on par with the previous season).
I'll just do a simple + / - thing this time:
+ the comedy is toned down from season 3
+ it's more horror instead of the sci-fi commie plots
+ long episodes mean lots of character time but...
-...too often the character time feels somehow wasted
- like season 3, it's still force-feeding us with countless references to movies and books
- like season 3, it still feels fragmented due to splitting up the story between so many groups of people
- being largely a tribute, it's bound to be cliched, but it's starting to gather some cliches I don't like*
- some of the major plot points don't seem to make sense (at least yet)*

WARNING: "SPOILS SEASON 4" spoilers below
My main concern is, that the story becomes too fixated on its characters. So instead of another dimension and inhuman creatures, it seems we're about to be told how 001 and 011 actually created the Upsidedown. I've always hated the way most writers make everything revolve around their protagonists as if the world wouldn't even exist without them. It's just poor writing.
On a smaller scale, I've been wondering how the described trauma of 011 blocked her abilities when it did while she was perfectly capable of using them for years after the event. Maybe it's just my personal hatred towards the whole "protagonist loses his/her powers" cliche that prevents me from seeing the connection?
