New format

I plan to keep my DVDs, and still continue to buy more.
I look at it this way, at first, the new format is going to be pretty pricey, then within a year, DVDs prices are going to drop significantly, then when this happens, I'm going all out and buying them. And I'm still keeping my DVD player as my primary means of entertainment.
So, I'm not concerned about the new format. Plus, for a while, movies will come out in "new format" and DVD, and the DVD will be cheaper.

I usually rent in VHS and buy in DVD. There are a few reasons for this, we keep the DVD player in the living room and is also used for a CD player hooked up to an ancient turntable/tape deck/radio. In the bedroom where I watch most of my movies, we only have a VCR. Also, I don't want to put so much wear and tear on the DVD player. I only listen to CDs on it if we have guests over. I got this DVD player when they first came out and it was rather expensive. It is a 5 disc too. I don't think DVDs will go obsolete. They still sell casette tapes and VHS tapes, even vinyl so I think CDs and DVDs will be around forever.

In Soviet America, you sue MPAA!
It's all up to the studios, though hybrid discs are going to be possible (discs that are both BluRay and HD-DVD). What's funny about the whole thing though, is this:

"...the porn industry might end up deciding the outcome of the HD-DVD/Blu-ray debate. One side likes the higher capacity of Blu-ray, while others like the lower costs of producing HD-DVDs. Manufacturing 11,000 titles a year, the industry would have a sizeable say in the debate."

The important part of that article is that the players for the new format will be backwards compatible.

I can't see myself upgrading all of my DVD's (closing in on 1,000) simply b/c a new format provides for better sound and picture. Besides, it will be a long time until I can afford the TV and stereo upgrade necessary to take advantage of the new format.

When it's released and I can afford everything I might upgrade a few special films, but overall I don't think I'll be too affected by it.

I don't think HD-DVD or BluRay will be that successful, I bet they become like LaserDiscs are today. In about ten years when an even better format is available, someone will be saying, "I have the original cut on BluRay that also has a commentary", and then someone will respond by saying, "What the hell's a blue ray!"

I just know they're coming to kill me.

Run to the hills.

All good people are asleep and dreaming.
Having lived through the Beta vs. VHS, I'll wait till one beats the other out.

Somebody told me Japan has them out already but are around 5 grand to buy. There are apparently two slots. One for the blue-ray and one for the regular dvds.
