What's so great about Dirty Dancing (1987)?

Tools

Yeah I like Rocky and a couple of the Rambo movies and Predator, but I don't believe they are in the top 5 movies ever made, like my women friends think of Dirty Dancing.
Have you seen any other films with Patrick Swayze in them?

That elusive hide-and-seek cow is at it again
I don't think your typical guy wants or needs to flutter. We want action and violence and war and firecrackers and monster trucks. I'm generalizing here.

Not all.. I know a very straight Italian guy who loves "Connie and Carla"...

Not heard of that but I'm a sucker for The Notebook so I'm not judging.

Well as far as romance movies go, I feel Slumdog Millionaire and Titanic are two I thought were really good for example.

The Notebook was good too.

And yes I've seen other Swayze movies, why?

Its a musical about two women hiding from the mob as posing as men posing to be drag queens... very "flamboyant" film.

I saw most of Roadhouse on TV. But missed some of opening, way back in the day.

Watch some Swayze films, you will learn to appreciate the man who can kick your a$$ and dance at the same time..

Oh I got nothing against Swayze, just the story that was happening around him in Dirty Dancing, just didn't grip me so far, that's all.

The simple answer is Patrick Swayze. He appeals to the female audience that watched him at the time. But why don't his other movies receive the same level of rotation on cable stations? Because Dirty Dancing features romance and dancing, both of which appeal to women in general. Since there is a large demographic of middle-age women, TV channels have to cater to them in some way. What better than Dirty Dancing?

Saturday Night Fever appeals more to men, from what I have gathered.

I have still never seen dirty dancing! (I think I have a thread somewhere about movies we've never seen!)

I have seen Roadhouse and it is one of the most incredible movies I've ever seen!
By incredible, I mean not-credible.

It exceeds the suspension of disbelief:
Things like bar bouncers having international reputations (I don't know of any bouncers with even local reputations, no less international ones!) or how heterosexual female medical doctors have free time that they spend (how else?) by going to hang out in strip clubs for male patrons that are known for their violence!
Where do people think lady doctors hang out when they get a moment of free time from their 60-hour work weeks, at a high class restaurant for dinner or in their homes to catch up on sleep? Nah! Roadhouse knows how it is - you go to any sleazy violent biker bar strip club and any woman you DO find on the customer side of the bar will be a renown surgeon, physio-specialist, or medical doctor!

Well maybe women do not like Saturday Night Fever as much cause the romance ends in tragedy more so?

Rock music and action movie obsessed guy,
Point Break was good, I wish it was directed by Martin Brest however (not that I hate Kathryn Bigelow, he would've done a lil better)

There really isn't any "romance" in SNF. Tony gets too much push-back from Stephanie for it to be romance. The only scene with romance is the one where they're dancing together to "More Than A Woman". The movie is almost more of a coming-of-age film than anything.

I have to agree regarding Saturday Night Fever, the so-called romance between Tony and Stephanie is the weakest part of the movie...and Karen Lynn Gorney's dreadful performance as Stephanie didn't help matters.

But I thought it was suppose to be dreadful, or not working out though.

Headsup: WOMEN LOVE TRAGEDY. They want a love story that will HAUNT them forever, and you know that's not the happily ever after ****. It's the feel-bad cluster**** of emotions that gets us, and KEEPS us.

That's something you NEED to know about women. HAUNT US. We want that, actually.

That's true a lot of women love Titanic (1997), more than men it seems, for a James Cameron movie.
