RIP Bob Newhart

I'm glad to have been able to witness Newhart's entire career (all but his early start in nightclubs). He knocked everybody out starting in 1960 with The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart (I wore out the groove on my copy), and he never looked back. What a long and prosperous career he had!
It always cracked me up how Newhart could get Rickles to fall down laughing just by a couple of deadpan lines. It's kind of like the effect that George Burns had on Jack Benny.

He's obviously been around for a long time. My first recollection goes back to when I was a kid and a friend's older brother had a bunch of LP's of Newhart performances. They were still pretty good.

I grew up watching "The Bob Newhart Show". I have it on DVD and it's still one of my favorite shows. The episode "Over the River and Through the Woods" is one of the funniest Thanksgiving episodes of any show ever.
I also loved him in his show "Newhart", and his recent appearances as Professor Proton on "The Big Bang Theory".

As tragic as this is, I have to admit I kind of saw this one coming. The last few public appearances that I saw of him he looked very frail and sickly. What a legend. I have to confess that I never watched Newhart, but I LOVED The Bob Newhart Show. He and Suzanne Pleshette were magic together. Also loved him in Cold Turkey, Elf, and In and Out. What a talent, what a loss.RIP

Very sad. I loved him in his first series with Suzanne Pleshette. The supporting cast was stellar but Bob made the series. I only watched his second series occasionally but when I did I laughed. I did watch the finale and it was a well-earned classic. Like Gideon58, I loved him in his supporting roles in Elf and In and Out. I saw Cold Turkey as a kid but it's been way too long to remember almost anything about it except the plot. I loved Bob and that included all his appearances on talk shows. A true comic legend. Godspeed, Bob.

Bob Newhart was a comedy legend who I liked very much, as I've written on here before. I strongly preferred his first show where he played a psychologist to the second "Newhart" show, but I do think his brand of comedy was quite unique, not really seen today, and that there will likely never be another comedian like him again. He was one of a kind. He lived a very long and successful life, but I am sad I never got the opportunity to see him perform. I would have liked to have done that, and he was doing touring until quite late into his life, and only stopped doing it at the time of COVID.

The show, produced by 'Entertainment Tonight,' will feature clips and interviews with the comedy legend and some of his co-stars and fans.
CBS, which was home to Bob Newhart‘s two most successful TV series, will pay tribute to the legendary comedian with a special set to air July 22.
The Entertainment Tonight-produced special, titled Bob Newhart: A Legacy of Laughter, will look back at Newhart’s life and career, from his start as a deadpan comedian through his TV and movie successes. Newhart died Thursday at age 94.
The special, hosted by ET’s Nischelle Turner, will feature behind-the-scenes footage from his film and TV work (from Entertainment Tonight’s four decades’ worth of archives) along with previously unseen interviews, including the final interview Newhart gave from his home in Los Angeles.
The show will also feature new and archival interviews with some of Newhart’s co-stars and admirers, including Jim Parsons, Reese Witherspoon, Will Ferrell and Jason Bateman, along with stories from his long marriage to his wife, Ginnie, who preceded Newhart in death in 2023.
Newhart rose to fame with his comedy album The Button Down Mind of Bob Newhart in 1960, which showcased his pinpoint timing and deapan delivery. He went on to star in CBS’ sitcoms The Bob Newhart Show (1972-78) and Newhart (1982-90), the latter of which had one of the most memorable finales in TV history. He also had a notable guest role on The Big Bang Theory, winning an Emmy for his performance (amazingly, the only one of his career) in 2013.
