Sex in the movies

Tools

I am one of few that thinks that films are going to get too explicit? I mean, there are more and more films being put on general release that feature real sex but are not classed as porn. For instance, Baise Moi, 9 Songs, Brown Bunny, Destricted (if that can be counted). All those films are available at your local blockbusters. (I even saw a copy of Deepthroat, but I digress...)
Now, some people say that those films get very little publicity, are played only in a few cinemas and aren't seen by that many people.

What I'm thinking is that eventually there will be a cross over, that actors in those films and their directors will make more mainstream movies and will influence them so that one day, mainstream films or blockbusters will feature real sex if not at least the odd boner!
(It is already happening, Paz Vega, Michael Winterbottom, Chloe Sevigny...)
I know I sound all conservative and pro censorship etc, but I just wanted to see if anyone else sees what I mean. A line has to drawn somewhere...

I get a bit bored with the sex stuff so I just fast forward it, much more enjoyable

I've never really got the attitude that violence is ok but sex isn't. After all, which would you prefer in real life?

What worries me is not the occasional 'boner' on screen (if you're old enough to get in to the movie, you're probably old enough to have one of your own, if you're of the male persuasion). Instead I worry about the increasing association of sex and violence and the glamorisation of sexual violence in the whole gorno genre.

Haunted Heart, Beautiful Dead Soul
in today's movies, sex is seen as a visual but in the heyday of old hollywood..it was alot more subtle. when you see a slinky dressed woman walking up the stairs, it was their way of saying ''here it comes'' or even when characters were seen flirting. today..sex is
put in a movie not to shock like it was back then. yes the apple pie was shocking but even now sex is overplayed in movies.

OK, why draw the line at "real sex" and on screen erections though? Also, are you against Pornography? I get the sense from your post that you have less of a problem with sex-on-film as long as it's confined to the "ghetto" of the porn sections.

If it's between people who are old enough to make decisions about sex without parental guidance (we could argue over where to draw that line, if you want) I don't see a problem with them doing it in front of a camera and calling it acting, in any kind of film.

On a related note:

My favorite single graphic novel is this manga by former porn-artist/writer turned semi-mainstream graphic novelist Naoki Yamamoto. It's called Arigatou It's about two teen sisters from a semi-normal Japanese family (whatever that means) who get involved with the wrong guys. I strongly wish there were movies that dealt with complexities of sex, family, and social psychology in as direct and unconflicted an artistic manner as that comic does. For the most part I place my love of movies well over my love of comics but that is perhaps the one exception where a comic story completely, outclasses any comparable material in cinema, I think partly due to all the baggage that goes with having to have real people stand in for characters.

Gorno? Is this something like Hostel or Turistas?

I think "sex" if it is a part of the plot, then well there ya go, but to just put sex in a film just for the heck of it is stupid. Seriously.
And I am a horny redneck guy.

I think besides 9 Songs, which was, quite frankly, boring and largely pointless, the most sexually explicit non-porn film scene I have seen was in the film Red Road. I think if the scene hadn't been so explicit and raw, it would not have had the same impact at all. Sex in appropriately rated films doesn't bother me, if it fits in with the film, I feel more uncomfortable about sexual language and innuendo in lower rated films.

Haven't seen Hostel but fairly sure this fits in the gorno/torture porn genre from what I have heard.

i also seldom get turned on by sex scenes in the movies

I guess I'm in the camp of people who aren't necessarily offended by sex in a movie, provided it has at least something to do with the plot. If theres sex just for sex sake, isn't it porn? I can watch specific movies for that :P

Often though movies try and slip in sex for sex sake (basically porn) just to make it more risky or interesting to the viewer and bring in more money, either that or art films are notorious for seeing how much skin they can show, because that makes them "edgy" and "provacative". So often these films end up having their porn scenes just to try and entice a few different people then they would normally or just to see a little bit hipper/edgier then they think that they would normally.

I think it depends on the story of the movie, if it is needed, then why not? Just make sure that they shoot the scene in a decent way...

I agree with you...its ok if the story needs sex scene....
