What lessons from movie going have you applied to real life?

Tools

...I find that people who neither read or watch movies often have a very limited view of the world. Watching movies & reading introduce me to a huge variety of characters, warts & all...
I've find the opposite can also be true, that people who hide away from the world and spend all their time escaping into movies have a real limited idea of life. (I don't mean you!) But from my time at MoFo I gather there are those whose only connection to the real world is via the movie world.

Discover I've figured out how to develop viewing choices to like SUPER-strong enthusiasm, where my day brightens no matter what happens. But I can't be sure those I know in my life quite "get" it all the way. I'm not even sure how you actually fully share that kind of thing or if it even can be shared out in life.
Alright I'll bite...what is this secret method all about?

Look, I'm not judging you - after all, I'm posting here myself, but maybe, just maybe, if you spent less time here and more time watching films, maybe, and I stress, maybe your taste would be of some value. Just a thought, ya know.

This reminded me of a guy I once met (and it may also resonate with you too, Rules)...

This guy came to stay at the home of friends of mine (he worked with one of them in the city and needed a place to stay in commuting distance as his actual residence was in Michigan).

This guy did not have a TV and was unfamiliar with virtually anything that was on TV or had been on TV.

So in the verbal interaction between him, myself and our friends it became evident how so many of our references (mine & my friends') were to TV shows, commercials and movies (whether it was a product slogan or one of our favorite lines from the Simpsons).

Half the things we said left their house guest at a loss as to what we were talking about. Talking with him was almost like talking to someone from a foreign country who didn't speak English (but he was an American who spoke English well as his first language)

It was some eye opening feedback as to how ingrained commercials, jingles, slogans, and TV / media culture is in our shared society and our brains.

Nope that doesn't resonate with me at all. You thought it would? The only thing that comes close is, in reading MoFo when some people use text-speak, or use numerous acronyms, which then makes me feel like the house-guest guy.

I only said that because you've said you don't have a TV (or don't watch TV).
Is that still the case, Rules?

Oh I was just fishing for fun! I knew that was what you meant. True, no TV service. I have a TV but only hooked up to a DVD player.

How long ago did your story take place? I don't ever recall anybody ever talking 'tv' so much that I couldn't understand them.

It probably was about a decade ago.

Not that the guy couldn't understand everything we talked about, but things like jokes around the dinner table that relied on some reference to commercials or TV shows. (We were big on repeating lines from things or using them as responses.)

It didn't make me feel bad for or about the guy, but about us - that so many jokes and references were something from TV. It was something we really didn't realize we did so often until we met him.

The funny thing was, although the guy was unfamiliar with TV, he was a techie (I think working on computers & the Internet was what he did for a living) - and I always remember when I was eating over, he came to the dinner table, opened a laptop on one side of his plate, and put a cell phone on the other and kind of went into his own "Inter-World" during dinner!

Minio, why you lying!

Kinda did "fit" in all the wrong ways haaa, silly minio! But- no, viewing enthusiasm is NOT always erotic.

Sorry if I'm rude but I'm right
What if it's not me lying, but everybody else is lying that I'm lying?

I would imagine it’s rather hard to “hide away from the world”. I mean one has to earn a living, shop for food, take one’s pets to the vet, have one’s own annual medical checkups, etc., etc.

All I know is that at the end of a bad day, watching a good movie is so therapeutic.

Probably the only secret's that

I don't think it's "all about me" be that as it may, instead I think it's that I associate with my viewing selections in a way that reinforces my frame of mind when something stressful happens. Don't know that it's actually secret, but that people identify with their endeavors to varying degrees depending on enthusiasm level.

Get busy living, or get busy dying!

The entire text is one of the best things I've ever read on this forum.

About the discussion going on I won't even start quoting users here because I'll probably open a new discussion, better not, for me. But overall, I do think movies can have the effect Yoda said, it had on me, that's why I love 12 Angry Men for instance, it can give you a new perspective on something you never though about, or you have, but you never saw it that way.
I also agree with Mr Minio, if people believe a movie can change them into becoming a better person, I won't even question that, but I'll question what a better person is, and why do you wanna become that better person. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. What is good for one person is destructive for another. We're all full of dualism.
