Killing Eve

"Eve's life as a spy is not adding up to what she had hoped it would be when she started. She is a bored, very smart, MI5 security officer who is very desk-bound. Villanelle is a very talented killer, mercurial in mood, who clings to the luxuries of her job. Eve and Villanelle go head to head in a fierce game of cat and mouse, each woman equally obsessed with the other as Eve is tasked with hunting down the psychopathic assassin."

I've started watching this and so far it's decent, but not brilliant.

Jodie Comer is the highlight so far. This is the first time I'm seeing her and she's very good. I've never been that hot on Sandra Oh, and her character kind of annoys me in this. I liked her in Sideways but that was a long time ago, here she's just very scatty and disorganised. I must admit I'm not a fan of those type of characters.

By virtue of the fact that I could not find anything on Hulu to watch, I started to watch this. Enjoying it 2 episodes in. Very strong 2 female leads & I like both of them. Jodie Comer is new to me & she’s delightful (even though she plays a psychopath).

Will see how it goes. At any rate, it’s something different.

I like Killing Eve too. I'm watching at UK broadcast pace (season 2, ep4 tonight) and I enjoy it. I think it's overhyped, but I have a theory about that. Naturally. I think it connects more with women than men. Not that all women love it and men don't or any crap like that. It's just that all the, what I consider overly lavish praise for this series, has been written by women. And I do mean all. That's not to say there isn't something similar out there written by a man (surely there must be?) but I've not read it yet. Maybe there's an inbuilt bias in the reviewing? As it is so 'female' (the first season was written by the creator and writer of the wonderful Fleabag. Which I heartily recommend) female reviewers/journalists are given the job of reviewing it more often that a male?

I only know two other people who watch this IRL. One male, the other female. The female thinks it's amazing, whilst myself and the other guy think it's really good, but not the masterpiece so many (women) say. Not as extreme, but it looks like there's a split on this thread too in the very few posts there have been.

I think it's because it's a very female programme and there's something in that which women pick up on. After all, it is very different to have women in so many prominent role in a production like this. Obviously there's the actresses, (I love Fiona Shaw in this. I think she steals every scene she's in, but then, she's usually on-screen with Sandra Oh who's the 'ordinary' character) then there's the writer(s), producer, exec producers.

Two great things for me about season 2 so far (don't worry, neither of these are spoilers) the first is Adrian Scarborough, who's an actor I really like and would cast as Jim Sterling in My Dad Wrote A Porno if I was ever allowed to do such a thing. Second is Emma Pierson, who's a stone cold fox. Still.

Hulu doesn’t have season 2 (idiots!) so have had to buy season 2 from amazon. One episode in, I think.

One thing I hate is that the show keeps killing off terrific male actors. Bill Haig is gone & the very tall actor has also gone.

Some of the scenes are very wacky & overly-long. Who was that older woman Villanelle was trying to seduce in season 1? Didn’t follow that arc at all & then the woman was out of the show.

Very unusual show. Jodie Comer v. excellent actor, as is Oh. Fiona too as a sex-bomb is very funny & believable.

Just finished the first two episodes of season one...my original attraction to this show was Sandra Oh, who I still miss on Grey's Anatomy, but there's so much more here. I loved the irony of the two principal characters meeting in the ladies room in the pilot. I love the fact that this assassin is getting cocky and showing off. I'm already seeing the end of Eve's marriage and other collateral damage. Jodie Comer is a revelation as the icy assassin...an offbeat bit of casting that really works. Loved that scene when they were simultaneously googling each other. I was also intrigued by the fact that it was written by Phoebe Waller Bridge, the star of Fleabag. I'm liking this a lot more than Fleabag. I will definitely continue to watch for now.

⬆️ Didn’t like Fleabag at all, but enjoyed Killing Eve for a couple of seasons.

If you like Jodie Comer you might enjoy a BBC mini-series called Thirteen from 2016. Comer was so good in this.

Just wrapped ep 3...I knew the minute Bill started following her that she somehow knew she was being followed. The final scene was wonderful...this show features some really extraordinary camerawork.

I think you hit the nail on the head there.

My mum is really enjoying it more than I am, and I just sort of tolerate the show a bit more (see my review thread). I see the initial flaws and problems, whilst I think a lot of 'critics' these days just become fans more so than critics and just overtly praise a show too much.

Just wrapped episode 4...not really clear as to why these people are after Frank. I couldn't believe Villanelle actually sent Eve's suitcase back to her and made sure she knew she had been through it. I also know that those other two assassins Villanelle was working with would be dead before the end of the episode. The final scene was excellent.

Ep 5 was AMAZING!! I'm all in now. I still don't get why Villaleal bought Eve a new wardrobe, but they did clear up why these guys were after Frank. Needless to say, the confrontation between Eve and Villaleal was extraordinary...beautifully directed and acted. Also was very pleased to learn that Villaleal wasn't supposed to kill those other two assassins. I also believed her when she said she hates what she does. Loving this.

Just wrapped ep 6....wow...nothing is as it seems here...allegiances change from scene to scene and no one sees to be who we thought they were...the only constant here are Eve's instincts. This one's definitely got my mind racing,, but I'm thinking I need to just stop trying to figure out what's going on and just watch.

Just watched ep 7. As much as we've been shown about what an inventive assassin she is, I love that one of Villaneal's greatest weapons is her sexuality. I knew there was more to Carolyn than meets they eye. Even though things don't look bright for them, I really hope nothing happens to Eve's husband or Kenny.

Just finished the season 1 finale...fascinating...I'm beginning to think that her sexuality is the most dangerous weapon in Villanel's arsenal. The power she can exert over people, especially women, is like nothing I've seen. I'm very curious about the relationship between Villanel and Constantin...it's so complex I want to know more. Looking forward to season 2.

Just wrapped ep 1 of season two...I LOVED that it began thirty seconds after the season 1 finale. Villaleal is definitely the most durable assassin I have ever seen. I don't believe a word that comes out Carolyn's mouth.

Season 2 ep 2 was beyond odd...the whole thing with Julian was too creepy...what were his plans for her? This was the first time since I've started watching where Villaneal seemed to be feeling vulnerable and scared. I can't believe she just let the old woman walk away, for some reason I think that's going to become important later. I really need to stop trying to figure this out and jjust watch.

Ep 3 of season 2 was a little confusing but never uninteresting...Carolyn definitely seems to be the one who has all the power here, but can't tell where the power is coming from yet...the relationship between Constantin and Villanel continues to confuse and it was great to see Villlanel be worried about that other assassin. And for a show so rich with gritty realism, I had a hard time getting behind Eve "sensing" Villanel" was behind that door...felt forced to me. I'm hating what's coming between Eve and Kenny and the finale with the lipstick was perfection.

Thanks to ep 4, I'm now thinking that Villanelle might actually be working for Carolyn, but I've learned to assume nothing on this show until I'm told straight out. I'm also finding Villanelle's whole "I'm bored" motif kind of childish, as was the attempted murder in that ladies room...it seems kind of early for her to be seriously screwing up the way she is, but it is what it is.
