Is it any wonder cinema is dying.

The Bib-iest of Nickels
I think I'm just lucky that I get to go to cinemas that are really cheap and don't have unruly audiences - the only real catch being a matter of traveling distance and also the fact that, while I can see the big releases and select small ones for cheap, most of the foreign/indie/arthouse ones are at more expensive cinemas (if they screen in nearby cinemas at all). My main concern has always been with the range of distribution and accessibility more so than the cost, though cost is definitely a factor if it's a toss-up between a max of $15 for a movie ticket and paying $20-$30 to buy a DVD (especially since video stores are dying out and being replaced with these vending machines that, like the cinemas, carry the big releases and little else aside from that). Such is the way of things.
I actually have a guy on eBay that I buy the new movie releases from. They're "rental" versions, which I am fine with because I never watch bonus footage on any of my DVDs, and he only charges like 7-9 bucks per film. Free shipping, also.

The theater I have usually only plays the big mainstream films, but I have a theater that's about an hour-and-a-half away I occasionally watch films at. I saw La La Land and The Witch over there. They have better seats too, and the theaters are double the size.

Also forgot to add this to my other post, but lol @ the idea that general film quality has been in decline since the '80s.

£8 for me to watch films in the 2.8k resolution and not the true 4k form which is a mood killer for me after visiting the Bradford museum that has the IMAX in there.

I stopped going to movies years ago. Prices became ridiculous when buying DVD's got cheaper than going to movies and instead of just talking to each other people also started to talk to mobile phones. Discipline has gone down and basic manners can't be enforced. I much rather watch my movies at home; if I was happy with Xth generation VHS copies as a kid blu-rays, DVD's and streaming services easily provide good enough experience.

I still attend the cinema there and then, but not as much as before. I tend to stick to DVDs, which I'm surprised at. Netflix just hasn't hit me as hard yet. I have an account, just surprised at how little I tend to use it.

The truth is in here
I agree the ticket prizes have gotten to the point of ridiculousness, but I still go to the movies sometimes. There's still something special about seeing something on the big screen, and I'm not gonna be scared away just because it costs more. I now go maybe once a month instead of more often, but I make sure whenever I go it's gonna be something special. No more getting dragged into movies I don't really want to see.

Most interesting man in the world
I prefer popcorn but I am not shelling out 7 to 8 bucks for popcorn and 5 to 6 bucks for a drink. I love to eat in the theater too but this s**t is not going to fly man.

It's not just movie theaters
It's amusement parks as well don't most bars/strip joints etc charge a cover charge and or have a 2 drink minimum ?

It may be declining compared to the years past but I'm sure there will always be movie fans who will shell out $$ for the movie experience, me included Unless you have your own personal home theatre, there's just something special bout the whole movie experience.

Yeah it's just not the same without people talking through the movie or kicking the back of your seat.

I'd say not telling the audience to ****ing behave themselves for 2 hours or so has done more than HALF the job of killing cinema. Most people cite the same reason that they don't go to movies anymore - they refuse to pay that kind of money only to have the (not cheap) experience ruined by others who can't shut up for 2 minutes.

No idea why ushers aren't allowed to escort people out who can't behave themselves.

Night School with Kevin Hart has a better opening weekend than First Man with Ryan Gosling....there's a good reason cinema is dying

Welcome to the human race...
The premise of the thread is: Cinema is dying, not movies. In other words....film as art is becoming rarer in Hollywood, while movies as sh** is proliferating.
That's not the premise of the thread, though.

Personally I don't know why anybody would eat popcorn, let alone pay money for that junk, nobody is forcing you to buy sweets either.

I'm guessing it's the same problem as most areas of life, and that's budget cuts. None of my local cinemas even have ushers anymore, they have one guy who checks your ticket before you enter the area with all the screens, and that's it. The days of having an usher per screen are dead.

My favourite local cinema has recently converted all the seating to big reclining seats. I love it not jusy bevause its more comfortable, but because the seats are so big, I'm far enough away from anyone else yammering and nobody can kick my seat. It's improved the whole experience for me. The price is right too, as if I go on Mondays, Tuesdays or Wednesdays, a ticket only costs a max of £4.50.

I thought it more a case of nowadays you can't enforce discipline on kids so ushers can't say stfu anymore.

Most times I go to the cinema there isn't even a person to check your ticket. I can't remember the last time a worker took my ticket before going into the screening area. Also no one in the screening while the film is on, they only come in while the end credits run.

I usually go to an Odeon cinema.
