Anderson Bench (2016)

Produced and Directed by John Schneider

Starring Jordan Salloum, Maddie Nichols, Brande Roderick, Dane Rhodes & Chasen Schneider

Anderson Bench is a man not only having a bad day but a bad life. At his Doggie Burger job his boss sits in the back room smoking pot while berating him in front of his customers. At home his invalid wife puts him down and constantly screams at him too. His only friend is his pet mouse, until a new industrial shredder and a pretty, homicidal, hitchhiker who just shows up out of nowhere enter his life, and both give him an idea what to do.

Anderson Bench is a black comedy, even a splatter comedy if you will, thoroughly drenched in hedonism, blood, and music. From the start music plays continuously keeping in step with the tone of each scene. Country, R&B, alternative, and liberal doses of Ennio Morricone play out with the visceral carnalism of blood on screen.

A talented cast has plenty of fun with this. Jordan Salloum paints his Anderson Bench character as a man resigned to his fate in life who is not given to emotional outbursts yet communicates so well through expression. Maddie Nichols electrifies the screen with her performance as the hitchhiker Bethany who sets things in motion, being unpredictable and guiling. Dane Rhodes gives a refreshingly comedic performance that trespasses the line between light and dark in concert. Brande Roderick gives a great performance that will teach you not to assume anything. Chasen Schneider has a limited appearance but his scene will set off inappropriate laughter.

This is not your family comedy or even close. Shooting people in the head, dismemberments, corpse grinding, there's plenty to disgust and offend, served up extra crispy woof-woof. And yet, twisted as it is, Anderson Bench succeeds as comedy, and even a romance.

Anderson Bench is a different but definitely fun movie I would recommend. Not quite what you would expect from John Schneider, that guy from The Dukes of Hazzard and Smallville, but now we know he has a wicked and even sick side to him.
