Victim of The Night
Gonna try and watch the Strangers sometime this week. Got the AMC Stubs thing so might as well make the most of it.
I did not enjoy that I'm afraid to say. Finally watched it about a month ago and just really didn't think much of it. The suspension of disbelief required was just too much.

Victim of The Night
I have yet to be let down by an Exciteorama movie I had never seen before. I also dug Trancers.
I am so pleased!

Savageland (A-)

A mockumentary with slight found footage elements, documenting the murders of a town of 47 on the Mexico-US border in a single day. The movie follows many people as they talk about the sole survivor and chief suspect, as evidence of something more sinister is revealed.

This is one of those movies where people are the real monsters, but it's good. The horror elements here are almost background, and there's no scene in particular that is meant to scare, so to speak. It's just a slow burn film with lots of people talking, and how disturbing it is is really going to be about how you head into it. Great stuff.

Just wrote a little about this in “What are you watching tonight?” thread, but I’m planning on seeing In A Violent Nature, which is a Canadian slasher film described as an “ambient slasher”, and compares to slow cinema.
It’s unique where it’s told from the pov of the slasher

WARNING: spoilers below
There's a lot of hiking around in the woods in this one. I like hiking around in the woods. I liked this movie, it left me really early wanting to go hiking in the woods. I can be pretty simple sometimes.

Skew, 2011 (B-)

A film about three folks going to a wedding on what seems to be quite a long road trip. The main character films everything, but things go awry in a way that is seems connected to the camera.

This is a low budget horror with some good creepy stuff early on, but then there's scenes that just remind you that it's a silly, low budget movie. Like when they get taken to the station for being super prime suspects for arson, but the cop lets them go after they promise they didn't do it. Also the two or three scenes with those eyeshadow wearing zombie thingies that add nothing, but do detract a lot from the creepiness that is otherwise well set up elsewhere. The relationships between characters is also undercooked and seems to never get to the point where it might compromise the movie's later plans for the characters. It's ooooooooook.

Absolutely zero expectation that this will be good. I get that money talks and Smile was a hit, but it's also one of the hardest drops on rewatch I've seen from a movie. That guy won't make me tune in to anything yet. And I do wish that, instead of cashing in on proper great movies' reputations, remakes were more about giving a second chance to previously squandered ideas.

Pale Blood -

Was this movie made solely to play in the backgrounds of Goth clubs? Probably, but it’s a solid if not slightly campy combination murder mystery/unconventional vampire flick. It is unconventional because in true Goth fashion, the vampires are not only the heroes, but also misunderstood, politely taking just as much blood as they need to and only concerned with finding the few survivors of their kind. A very good George Chakiris adds substance and class to the proceedings as Michael Fury, who is scouring L.A. for a serial killer who may be a contemporary who takes more than he needs. His unwavering dignity contrasts in the best way with his mission's biggest complication: Van, a would-be filmmaker and vampire enthusiast played with wide-eyed, scenery-chewing enthusiasm by Wings Hauser. Their not always complementary agendas result in a decent mystery with surprises that not only snuck up on me, but also do not seem contrived. Again, it is enhanced - well, for the most part, more on that later - with visuals and music that are very much products of their times. Michael's blacklit condo, for example, is so aesthetic, as the kids say, that I'm surprised I haven't seen images from it in vaporwave subreddits before. Agent Orange's songs also make the soundtrack on par with another stylish vampire flick from this era that may have inspired this one, The Lost Boys.

The movie's flourishes are entrancing, but they eventually wear out their welcome, the montages in particular. Besides making me wonder if the filmmakers had to meet a running time requirement, they stall the momentum of the story. Other than that, despite the occasional chintziness, this is one of the better straight to tape movies I can remember seeing. Moreover, even though the story is spliced with what ends up coming across as filler, that does not mean it is flimsy. If you are also a vampire lover and are fascinated by all things Goth, it's a must see. Just don't be surprised if you find yourself wondering if eggs are actually aphrodisiacs afterwards (I hope that didn't scare you away).

Incident at Montauk (D)

Completely uneventful found footage about a guy looking for aliens. There isn't much to say because there just isn't much there at all.

The House on Mansfield Street (C-)

Found footage about a guy moving into a new flat somewhere in the UK. Spooky shenanigans ensue. This one is neat at first in sort of a Marble Hornets kind of way, but fizzles out and doesn't quite make sense unless you extrapolate a lot, and probably beyond what is reasonable to based on what the movie provides. Which really isn't much.

Rabid, 1977 (A-)

Cool movie, and extremely Canadian, about an outbreak of some sort of zombie disease caused by something like stem cells. I really enjoyed this one. It's directed with purpose and feels tight, so to speak, in how it moves along. I'm not sure what it's saying, or if it's saying anything at all. I do have a feeling there's something here I'm missing, so I'll watch it again one day. I like the sort of feminist vibe it had that maybe I'm completely hallucinating. The movie seems very sympathetic to the lead, all in all, which I appreciated.

@Wooley, I finally got around to watching Phase IV tonight and loved it. Such a unique vibe. Sort of reminded me at times of Fantastic Planet, of all things.

There's an over-association between deserts and alien planets. I guess we could blame Mars and the Moon. And Tatooine.

Today I worked on a client who was COVERED with horror movie related tattoos and it was basically like a game figuring out what they were.

I spotted a key on a ring that was from The Shining, the hook from Candyman, the bitten pumpkin lollipop from Trick R Treat, a Saw-referencing jigsaw puzzle piece, Freddy Kruger stripes, the knife from Halloween, Chucky the doll, and possible the villain from Castle Freak! Also, on each calf was a matching tattoo of Sally and Jack Skelington. Aw!!

How cool! Love that.

They basically just wanted to lay there in silence, which is fine, except I wanted to be like "Hey I know that this is a professional relationship but maybe we could also be best friends???!!!!"

(Also, I see a LOT of bad tattoos and these were really nicely done).

This sounds so lovely. If I see something like that, I do usually pay the compliment. Won’t hurt, you know. I’m the person who tells everyone with great shoes on that they have great shoes, even the other table in a restaurant.

Absolutely! I find that compliments that are about someone's taste are always well-received and can also be a good conversation starter.

They should have had each body part themed, like the right arm was slashers, the left was ghosts and what have you, Right leg could be monsters, left legs whatever elseand then the rest of the body could be random.

Pff. Good luck with that one. I actually think the end result may well turn out fine, but nothing eclipses that original. I was just thinking about Possession recently after watching The Devil.
