My Most Hated Television Characters List

Schneider, One Day at a Time

This character was extremely popular, but it doesn't change the fact that he made my skin crawl. Schneider was the superintendent of the building where divorcee Ann Romano (the late Bonnie Franklin) lived with her two daughters (Mackenzie Phillips, Valerie Bertinelli). Schneider thought he was God's gift to women and convinced himself that Ann had the hots for him. He would enter their apartment without knocking and was constantly offering Ann unsolicited advice on the care and feeding of her daughters, despite the fact that he was a single guy who knew nothing about raising children. It didn't help that he looked like a 70's porn star.

I have to disagree with this one. I loved Schneider. He was one of my favorite characters on the show.

I never knew till much later that Pat Harrington Jr. was something of a known star (2nd string, of course) long before his stint as Schneider.

When I started watching the re-runs of Make Room for Daddy (The Danny Thomas Show), Pat appeared quite frequently (as a character named "Pat Hannigan"!) He was basically playing himself as a comic and entertainer much as Danny Thomas played himself under the name "Danny Williams" (and similar to the way Desi Arnaz played himself as "Ricky Ricardo" on I Love Lucy.)

Harrington was also a writer and did extensive voice work for cartoons both before and after One Day At A Time. He was a Korean War veteran, intelligence officer, well-educated with a master's degree and a pilot.

I didn't know that. I think the only shows that I saw Pat Harrington on back then were "One Day At A Time" and some game shows. I've seen him some other stuff since then, but not while that show was in its original run.

Nick Tortelli was scum. I never understood what Carla (or Loretta) saw in him.
He had "the look." There was an episode where "the look" was a sub plot. When Nick looked at you a certain way it was over - he had you. Dianne thought it was ridiculous but Carla kept warning her about it. At the end of the episode Nick gives Dianne the look and she doesn't appear to fall for it, however, as soon as Nick leaves Dianne lets out a huge sigh as if it took everything she could muster to not give in.

I saw that episode, with "the look", but I don't care what the writers said about him and his "look". Nick Tortelli had absolutely no redeeming qualities.

39.

Jazz, The Fresh Prince of Bel air

Once The Fresh Prince of Bel air was a certified hit and Will Smith had a little juice regarding who was on the show, he found a role for his old recording partner DJ Jazzy Jeff, playing his old pal from the hood who had a serious crush on Will's cousin Hillary (Karyn Parsons). Each of Jazz' pointless appearances on the show ended with hi being thrown out of the house by Will's Uncle Phil (the late James Avery).

38.

Randy Dworkin, Law and Order

Actor Peter Jacobson brought one of TV's most obnoxious characters to life. Randy Dworkin was a smart-assed defense lawyer who loved facing off against Assistant DA Jack McCoy (Sam Waterston). He especially loved cases that had anything to do with anti-semetism, since he was Jewish himself and would beat that horse to death all the way to the closing arguments. God, I wanted to punch this guy in the face.

37.

Mimi Bobeck, The Drew Carey Show

For fans of this show, I don't think any explanation is required here, but for non-fans, I will just say that this character was like nails on a chalkboard.

36.

Manny Pritchett, Modern Family

The whole concept of a 40 year old man inside a 15 year old body is nothing new to television but it doesn't help when the young actor playing the 15 year old is a really bad actor, and after 11 seasons on the air, this character continues to grate on the nerves because Rodriguez is a really bad actor in a really sterling ensemble cast.

35.

Quinn Fabray, Glee

Diana Aragon played the head cheerleader who actually became pregnant by Puck (the late Mark Salling) but by the time she found out she had already broken up with Puck and was dating Finn (the late Corey Monteith). She then convinced Finn that the baby was his and while trying to perpetrate that lie, her parents threw her out of the house and she even considered selling the baby to Terri Schester (see #71) who was faking a pregnancy to hold onto her husband, Will (Matthew Morrison).

34.

Debra Barone, Everybody Loves Raymond

I know a lot of people are not going to like this choice ad Patricia Heaton may have won 2 Emmys for her portrayal of this character, but I still found this character extremely unlikable making it impossible for me to watch this show on a regular basis. There was something very off putting about this character. It always seemed like Ray couldn't do anything right in her eyes. She often held him to impossibly high standards that made it hard to accept what Ray ever saw in the woman. There was a form of consequences to her behavior in the way she was treated by Ray's mom, Marie (Doris Roberts), but Debra always seemed to take it out on Ray.

The ones i clicked on were characters I kinda liked and I think give them credit for making people hate them. Cause some characters are made to be hated. I however loved Arnald

I can't agree with Debra or Jazz. Especially Jazz. I know there's plenty of people who don't/didn't like Debra, but if I had to be with that idiot every day I think I'd be acting similarly. Idiot.

34. Debra Barone, Everybody Loves Raymond
I suspect you're right in that this isn't going to be someone that folks don't like.

To me, she was perfect for the role.....her character really makes allows the humor in Ray's character come out. Kind of a straight man in a way.

There's another character in another series that she reminds me of that I can't quite put my finger on at the moment.

When they have a cowboy, they want a poet.
They'll say "I don't care if he's a poet or cowboy, so long as he's a nice guy. But oh, I'm so attracted to that bad guy over there."
Understand this last part, and you'll get them all.

It wasn't the actress I disliked, it was the character.

I was talking about the character.

Ah, I see. It's the "role" thing.

What I mean is, that character's role (straight man wife to the bumbling Ray) was perfect for the show (IMO).

33.

Raven Baxter, That's So Raven

I can't lie, most of my hate for this character stemmed from my white-hot hate of the actress who portrayed her. Raven-Symone redefined annoying in this Disney show that was actually created specifically for her. I only watched this show because there was nothing else worth watching during its Saturday morning time slot.

32.

Cheryl, The Cosby Show

I guess I wasn't the only one who was annoyed by this character since she only appeared in four episodes. Cheryl (played by Vanessa Williams) was an obnoxious theater major attending the same college as Theo (Malcolm Jamal Warner) who Theo attempted a relationship with but this girl was so self-absorbed and obsessed with acting (which she was terrible at), it wasn't long before Theo headed for the hills.
