Nine-teen Eighty Four (1984)

This was my fourth Croenenberg to date, and of all four I thought Videodrome was the least good; not because of the effects (after that first one caught me off guard there was no problem), 'cause Rick Baker did an amazing job as allways, but because I just didn't find it very interesting or entertaining. It was one gory torture-porn scene after another with a meh plot trying to tie them together. I've liked the other stuff I've seen from him (History of Violence, Spider, Eastern promises), but there the stories were better. I've seen bits and pieces from The Fly, and what I've seen looks far more interesting. Looks to me that I'd like that one better. We'll have to see if I'll manage to squeeze that one into the time I got left before the deadline, but I'll preorotize the stuff I got lined up first.

Is it one of Croenenbergs more beloved films? I have not heard much about it here on the site. Or is it a personal favourite?

The Fly and Videodrome are definitely among the most well-regarded.

I actually rewatched Videodrome this weekend, and didn't like it quite as much as the last time I saw it. I still thought it was good though.

The Magnificent Ambersons - 7/10

Could have been great. Great theme, not enough time dedicated to the "important" stuff, but a lot towards the silly and the sentiments of weather. For an 88-minute, too much time is spent on boots, garment, mirrors, little kids fighting, again, minor things with no importance. I also didn't think the acting was very good; Agnes Moorhead was awful especially.

Resident Evil: Retribution - , maybe

I don't think anyone is too surprised at this point.

A Man Called Ove

This one was a bit of a shocker for me, this is sort of a dark comedy/dramedy about a bitter old man who is trying to kill himself. Throughout the film we get flashbacks which help explain how Ove went from being a slightly autistic sort to a nightmare of a person. But while we're getting the explanation for why Ove is the way he is, you also have this cheerful yet domineering neighbor who's slowly using him but also bringing him back to civilization.

In other cases the movie might be a bit to sentimental but the horrors of Ove's old life unfolds in a refreshing way that you do come to like him. This is a difficult thing for most movies to get right. You understand why he hates people, with people who can be easy to hate.

This is one of those movies that really makes you laugh and cry, one of the best films of the year.

Chaplin (1992, 2nd rewatch)



It was ok. Nothing spectacular. Decent acting. I wasn't a fan of old Chaplin's make-up or scenes.

This was my fourth Wong Kar Wai, very good film. I'm really tired so can't be bothered posting much about it. Mostly i thought it had a very interesting story and interesting if quite exhausting at times story structure, as well as some powerful moments and good performances. i didn't like it as much as In The Mood For Love but i liked it about the same or maybe slightly less than Chungking Express.

Have you watched Happy Together? That's my personal favorite of his.

Manchester by the Sea (2016)

I didn't know if I was going to like this one as much as everyone else did. You Can Count On Me is a movie I liked, mainly for it's writing, and it's acting, but nothing I would rave about. This one has the same strengths as that film, but I got into this one more. I think it's because Casey Affleck was just so damn convincing that elevates the already good script even further. The best scenes are with Lucas Hedges, they work great together. It's by no means a game changer, or anything, but it wasn't ever trying to be. Just a good, non manipulative drama that succeeded at winning me over based on it's restraint, even when it had the opportunity to go full on melodrama so many times, all the way to it's satisfying, anticlimactic end.

Not yet, i've seen 2046, In The Mood For Love, Chungking Express and Fallen Angels. Don't really remember Fallen Angels though.

Falling Angels is good. Your next one should be Days of Being Wild, for sure, that's one of his best.

Was already planning on watching that one next since it is part of a thematic trilogy with In The Mood For Love and 2046.

I Know Who Killed Me - 1/10 - Had a friend over who loves horror/thriller films, and she knew I was looking for a movie to review. So, we turn on my PS3 and go to this app called "Crackle". Watch movies for free, but dang it! An ad every 5-10 minutes. Well, while watching this movie, we were glad for the ads!

The acting is horrendous, the story and dialogue are trash, and the horrid misuse of the colors red and blue was too much! Seriously, the movie was bad enough, did the editor want to make it unwatchable?!? If so, congrats, you did it! You made it vomit-inducing!

Seriously though, I don't know what exactly what they were thinking, especially with a rather misleading title! If you've seen it, you know why I say it's misleading. If you haven't...well, you can ask me about it privately, or watch the movie yourself (which isn't recommended, but I can't stop you).

This film doesn't deserve all the hate it is receiving. Don't get me wrong, it's a terrible film, but people are hating it for the wrong reasons. Who cares that they reboot the film with women? As long as the film is funny, entertaining, tells a good story and has likeable characters with a strong antagonist. Ghostbusters, has none of these things.

I don't know where to really start, but let me just say that everything about this film feels uncomfortably forced. The cameos, the call backs, the winks and nods...everything. I cringed at every little "hey, look at us acknowledging the original" comedy bit. Seeing Dan Aykroyd exclaim how 'He ain't afraid of no ghost' is not funny, but sad. You can tell that they tried to 'honour' the original, but it doesn't feel honoured in the slightest.

When the film was announced and the female cast was revealed, the internet trolls went on a sexist tirade. So what does Feig and company do? They incorporate it all into the story. First, they introduced Kevin, played by Chris Hemsworth and make him the stupidest character cinema might has ever seen. A bit where he covers his eyes not to hear something is used twice within 2 minutes. Second, they quote actual youtube comments when they post a ghost online. Third, Jones pulls the female AND race card when she crowd surfs and no one catches her. If they wanted to tackle the hate head on, they needed to make a stronger film to shut these people up, not half assed comedy remarks and hateful attacks on a gender out of spite.

Jones does her angry black woman schtick that she uses on SNL, maybe if I didn't know who she was or what she does, I might find her tolerable? Wig plays up the awkward comedy bits that she does so well and McCarthy does her female Chris Farely physical comedy bits. People seem to be praising Kate McKinnon, but I found her character to be zany for the sake of tired comedy antics. She says and does something zany and then introduces a new ghost busting tool for them to use. That's the extent for her character. She has the best 'look' down, but nothing else stands out.

I'm trying to remember the villain here, but he was so dull and boring that I forgot everything about him. Seriously, they couldn't of thought of something interesting for this movie? You have a lot of creative ideas at your disposal for a villain that deals with ghosts and we're given whatever the hell they want to call it here. I give the filmmakers props for the ghost designs, that's one aspect of the movie that I did find interesting. The rest of the film is a mess of epic proportions.
