Top 5 films each decade

Tools

Hi.
Top 5 film each decade. You can do whatever decades you want, but I'll start of with mine for the 1920s to the 2010s (not expecting many far prior to this period tbh!).
You can have 1 decade where you pick 10 films instead of 5, plus 1 bonus film (so 6 or 11 in 1 decade).
No documentaries.

What would be your top recommendations?
Drive My Car, Mom, Is That You?! & Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell

I've only seen Drive My Car. I'll have to check the others out.
If you've seen it and it's not in your top you already done goofed

I liked it a lot and enjoyed how it expanded on the healing through role playing theme from my favorite segment of Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy, but it felt hobbled by the various eccentricities of its writing (Oto conceiving Yusuke's stories during sex, Koji going berserk at people taking photos of him, and the detail of Masaki's mother having (I think it was) schizophrenia). Given the film had a mostly straight face and was a genuine drama with real people, these details felt like dead weight. Again though, I still found the film deeply moving aside from this element.

Early decades will have fewer than 5 because I'm only including movies I genuinely liked. Also I'm too lazy to look up directors and dates.

Pre-1920s
The Cameraman's Revenge
A Trip to the Moon

1920s
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
The General
The Kid

1930s
Freaks
Gone With the Wind
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

1940s
Bambi
Dumbo
Pinocchio
Casablanca
Gaslight (either version, I like them about the same)

1950s
The Hanging Tree
East of Eden
Wild Strawberries
Rear Window
Alice in Wonderland

1960s
Persona
How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Woman in the Dunes
Planet of the Apes
Onibaba

1970s

The Long Goodbye
Harold and Maude
Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo

1980s
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
The Road Warrior
Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Gremlins
Heathers

1990s
Being John Malkovich
Dances With Wolves
Clay Pigeons
Army of Darkness
The Big Lebowski

2000s
Quills

2010s
Her
Wreck-It Ralph
Mad Max: Fury Road
Joker
Ernest & Celestine
The Broken Circle Breakdown
You Were Never Really Here

ETA: Just saw the rule that one decade can have 10. So I'm going to expand the 2010s.

Loads and loads of older films are really enjoyable.
I do wonder though whether in some of the polls for the early decades, how many people voting have actually watched the films they're voting for, rather than going on reputation!
I'm sure that many have, but perhaps not everyone?
Anyway, thanks for your 5s. I like Harold and Maude too (especially the first half).

Trouble with a capital "T"
My comments in blue on Robert the List-list.
1920s
Sherlock Jr 1924 Keaton...Keaton's the man, good one.
Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans 1927 Murnau...Very poetically filmed.
The Passion of Joan of Arc 1928 Dreyer...Strong visuals, heartbreaking story.
Pandora's Box 1929 Pabst...Enjoyed this one.
Blackmail 1929 Hitchcock...Haven't seen it.

1930s
The Blue Angel 1930 von Sternberg...Good one.
Scarface 1932 Hawks...Worth it just for the grapefruit scene and Cagney's last appearance at the door.
The Roaring Twenties 1938 Walsh...One of my favorites!
The Adventures of Robin Hood 1939 Curtiz...Always a fun watch.
The Wizard of Oz 1939 Fleming...A classic I enjoyed.

1940s
Day of Wrath 1943 Dreyer...Damn powerful story!
Laura 1944 Preminger...Gene Tierney wow, great noir too.
Rome Open City 1945 Rossellini...Italian realism, liked it.
Panique 1946 Duvivier...not seen it.

Rear Window 1954 Hitchcock...Awesome film
The Bridge On The River Kwai 1957 Lee...Another awesome film.
Jalsaghar 1958 Ray...not seen it
Touch of Evil 1958 Welles...Loved it on a 1st watch but felt Orson was too much of a caricature on 2nd & 3rd watches. Still one has to be impressed with Welles cinematography direction.

1960s
Psycho 1960 Hitchcock....Hell yes.
Last Year At Marienbad 1961 Resnais...Did not do anything for me.

2001: A Space Odyssey 1968 Kubrick...a masterpiece what else can I say.

1970s
McCabe and Mrs Miller 1971 Altman...Respect it but it's hard to relate to as the sound mix makes hearing the dialogue hard.
Barry Lyndon 1975 Kubrick...Perfection
The Passenger 1975 Antonioni...not seen it
Jaws 1975 Speilberg...one of Speilberg's best.
Alien 1979 Scott...one of Scott's best.

La La Land 2016 Chazelle...Enjoyed this one.
Arrival 2016 Villeneuve...The aliens and their language was cool but the military threat was pot boiler and done a million times before.

Some disclaimer on these top fives:
  • I've only kept a record of my viewings for the six years I've been here (I've been watching movies regularly for 40+ years)
  • I've consciously omitted films I've seen too long ago to be sure of my current opinion
  • I don't usually make ranked lists so these are quickly thrown together and subject to change on a daily basis
  • I've probably forgotten something that should be there

That's why it's a challenge.

I've done it with songs too, which is even harder!

Nobody has 100 films per decade that they can't differenciate between in terms of greatness imo!

Yeah I can differentiate between the 1st, 13th and 96th but it's harder between 96th and 114th.
