Watches:

You ready? You look ready.
Who here still wears a watch? Ya know, one of them antiquated things that the smartphone killed?

I'm a Timex junkie, but I am adding a Hamilton mechanical to the collection soon. I have always wanted to own an Omega (thank you, 007), but no way am I paying what they cost these days.

The Collection

I haven’t worn a watch in decades. I almost always know what time it is & if I am outdoors I know where there are clocks. Or I just ask someone since everyone has a smart phone.

Post a photo of an Omega watch like you want.

It's been awhile since I've seen my gramp's watch, but I am fairly certain it looks just like this one.

Vintage Seamaster - 1960s

But if money were no object I would get one of their Moonwatches from the Speedmaster collection.

And here's the Hamilton I mentioned earlier.

Vintage. Or, to put it another way, old-fashioned. I like that it tells you the time & the day of the month. Nothing else needed. My fave of the 3 you posted.

Nasty strap.

You ready? You look ready.
It's a field watch on a strap; It ain't supposed to be pretty. That watch is a homage to another era.

To each their own. Case in point: I can't stand date indicators on my watches unless they are perpetual.

Just my personal aesthetic take. I’m fussy like that.

I’m amazed by the fact that this is still running on the original battery. The acrylic crystal has seen some pretty big scuffs but toothpaste buffs them right out. Been in and out of the water a few times, too

I’m a nerd 🤓

Nice.

I like watches in theory, but in practice I'm pretty fidgety and having something on my wrist like that all the time bothers the living daylights out of me. But they're a great accessory, no doubt, though increasingly an affectation more than a tool, for sure.

Yeah, they are a nostalgic piece that has largely become a fashion statement, but I don’t know where I’d be without a wristwatch. Oddly enough I rarely wore them as a child.

But maybe it’s time to retrain myself on orienting with a watch face. Great skill to know until the clouds come out.

Hey John, do you ever browse the General Movie Discussion board here?

I have about 50 different watches, but they all have pictures on the face of the watch. Some are Looney Tunes characters, some are New York Mets logos, some are Disney characters, etc.

However none of them have the right time, and most of them need a battery replaced. I don't use them as a watch. (I use my cell phone to find out the time.) I just like to wear them.

I'm the opposite about having a watch on my wrist. I've worn a watch for as long as I can remember, and it feels like I'm missing something if I forget to wear one. I'm just so used to having it on my wrist that I can't leave home without it.

You often seem to trend with what I’m reading in The NY Times. This was in yesterday’s paper:

John Demsey, the executive group president of the Estée Lauder Companies, voiced that concern even as he admitted a primary quarantine pastime.

“All I do is go through watch porn,” he said. “I’m selling watches, I’m buying watches. It’s crazy. I have no reason right now to buy a watch. I’m at home all day at a computer. Time is staring me right in the face. What reason do I have to look at my wrist? But I want a tangible sign of something, so I’m looking at watches.” And many other people are too.

Rolex Day-Dates that sold on the secondary market in 2020 for $30,000 are now going for upward of $50,000 on some resale sites. The Nautilus 5980, a rose gold chronograph sports watch from Patek Philippe that has a retail price of $85,000, can seldom be found on 47th Street for much less than $200,000.

One reason for surging prices, according to Benjamin Clymer, the editor of the watch site Hodinkee, is that ‘Switzerland shut down, so demand was there while the supply was dramatically reduced.’ But also, he said, “the wealthy that used to spend money on travel aren’t using it, so everything collectible is surging in value.”

Now that I think of it, I think I had a Cinderella watch as a child, which I loved. IIRC, it came in a little container with her glass (plastic) slipper.

I do from time to time, but I'm more of a lurker in there.
Okay; I just figured from your username that you might be interested in checking out my write-ups for Die Hard in my genre deconstruction thread

As much as I like NATO straps I am going to put this on a single strap RAF. That should be considerably less bulky.

And seriously? No love for my time to time pun? Gosh. Hit me with a hammer.

RAF? Guessing you don’t mean the Royal Air Force?

I did not pick up on your pun though I see it now. I need to watch more carefully.

@Stirchley: Yup, Royal Air Force.

But I came across a different type of wristband during my Googling that looks even better: the MN Strap. Might wait and ask for it for my birthday since it costs way more than I feel like paying right now.

Who knew we’d be discussing watch straps + the Royal Air Force. Something to learn every day.
