Is Die Hard a XMAS movie?

As to whether or not Die Hard is a Christmas movie, I feel like it's a how long is a piece of string question, or a chicken or the egg question that will forever be debated .

We could go the rounds on this, but who really cares?

Die Hard is a Christmas movie in the commercial sense of the term. If you're going to get precious about the etymology of the "X," then give it another name.
If by commercial you mean non-religious, you’ve kicked out most beloved Christmas movies.

This is the real War on Christmas.

I’m trying to think of truly religious, “spirit of Christmas” Christmas movies that are beloved. Even something like It’s A Wonderful Life and it’s Angel feels incidentally linked to the holiday and any religious conception, as it’s more socially focused.

Does A Christmas Carol even focus on “Christ?” I mean, it certainly focuses on family and charity (arguably, so does Die Hard) but if we give that to Christianity, most films become superficially Christian. Perhaps I’m forgetting elements that make it more specific.

There’s 3 Godfathers. That’s religious as heck and still pretty beloved. I guess that’s the only true Christmas movie I love. Goodbye Gremins, Edward Scissorhands, Elf, Black Christmas, A Christmas Story, everything by Shane Black, and Krampus.

If we get rid of A Christmas Carol, we'll have to get rid of the porn adaptation Passions of Carol (starring Sonny Landham as an Elvis impersonator), and I just can't abide by that.

You have my ax!

I've just split the difference and placed Die Hard somewhere between "every other movie" and a traditional "Christmas Flick." Nothing is kicked out.

At any rate, the comment was a flip way of offering an escape route to the either/or proposition. Of course it isn't a Christmas movie. Die Hard does have Christmas music and is set during the season and it is a story, in a way, of a couple rekindling their romance, but it's a stretch to place in the genre. People like the question because it is a borderline case (e.g., is a spork more of a spoon or fork? DEBATE!), so I proposed a borderline answer as a way to puncture the question.

And I would've gotten away with it too, if it weren't for your meddling kids!

Happy Holidays, MKS

And a happy new year to you, Mr. C. *tips hat*

It seems the War on Christmas has ended with a truce.
I saved your porno and this is the thanks I get???

It is not enough that I win. My enemies must lose.

Better Living Through Movie Quotes
Certainly "Die Hard" is a Christmas movie only, Bob Cratchit doesn't get more coal for the scuttle and ends up killing a bunch of people and Scrooge gets dropped off a high rise. It doesn't get any more "Christmassy" than that!

Is "Home Alone" Christmas movie? In so many European countries that movie is a Christmas staple.

As for the question of whether "Die Hard" is a Christmas movie, a few years ago I moved my DVD of the film off the Action-Adventure shelf and into the Christmas movie pile. So, I guess on some level, I did transition my thought about the movie.

Maybe a "Christmas Movie" doesn't have to be about Christmas values and messages, but a movie that people watch and associate with the holiday season. ?

I think that if we were to really get into the argument, sleeves rolled up, bared teeth, we should first define what *is* a Christmas/Xmas movie.

Easy. A christmas movie is a movie where there is a glimpse (or mention) of snow.

_____ is the most important thing in my life…
Of course it was never "the second-best action movie in a franchise" because who calls it the second-best Die Hard?

But seriously, I would've thought that "takes place during Christmas" was enough because anything beyond that means you're going to have to outline your exact parameters for what does or does not count as a Christmas movie, which means you could eliminate certain confirmed Christmas classics as a result. Going by this logic, we shouldn't consider It's A Wonderful Life a Christmas movie because most of it consists of non-Christmas flashbacks from George's entire life and the third act (which is the only part of the film to actually take place at Christmas) could be contrived to happen at another time of year.
I’m ready for you to go on another hiatus.
