Thoughts on remakes

I ain't gettin' in no fryer!
Hugh Jackman and Miley Cyrus are to star in a new film loosely based on The Bodyguard... I've also read the word "Musical" used in relation to this.
Oh my. Talk about trying to milk Miley for all she's worth while she's popular. Personally, I don't see her with a career once she's a little older. In about 10-15 years, she'll be featured in a "Where are they now" type show.

Banned from Hollywood.
Remakes are totally pointless...big studios trying to make money over already original material.

It's amazing how little creativity most screenwiters have in modern hollywood. Instead of rehashing old material they should try writing their own original stuff..remakes work on very few ocassions...like creating a totally new story based on the old one is the best way to go, instead of rewriting the whole thing again with very few alterations...one of the few remakes that i really loved was the 1983 remake of Scarface, but that's because it was a totally different story than the original. happens to be one of my fave movies as well...other than that, if it aint broke dont fix it..like i previously said.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again. What makes you think that there isn't any original scripts knocking around Hollywood? It's the moneymen that run the place and, given a choice between a proven winner and an untried screenplay my guess is, 95% of the time, they'll go with the proven winner. Besides, for the audience they make the films for, these are original films. How many 15 year olds do you think had heard of Black Christmas or Prom Night? Hell, how many do you think had heard of A Nightmare On Elm Street? I'd say the same is probably true of The Bodyguard. They've just moved from sequel to remake.

Maybe the bigger question is, are screenwriters in Hollywoon now censoring themselves by narrowing what they write in order to make it a more sellable product for the moneymen? Obviously this has always happened to a point, but some genres (comedy in particular) seem to be so restricted now that I'm having trouble remembering a studio comedy that wasn't either a teen/gross out or rom-com.

Maybe remakes in Hollywood are just trends--like anything else in this world. I remember when it was trendy to make Indie-like movies in Hollywood. It never lasts. Remakes will run their course as the public grows tired as rehashed storylines and studios will be forced to find something else to mass produce when box office sells decline.

When this decline occurs and what will replace it remains to be seen.

remakes are ok but we all know the endings

Maybe the bigger question is, are screenwriters in Hollywoon now censoring themselves by narrowing what they write in order to make it a more sellable product for the moneymen? Obviously this has always happened to a point, but some genres (comedy in particular) seem to be so restricted now that I'm having trouble remembering a studio comedy that wasn't either a teen/gross out or rom-com.
Even back in the 1930s-1940s when some of the top novelists were working on screenplays for the big studios, there was always some VP or studio head telling them their scripts needed changes to appeal to bigger audiences--put in a happy ending instead of letting the hero/heroine die. Insert a female in the story so there will be a love interest to attact the women. The moneymen have always controlled Hollywood because without their money, the films don't get made, and the moviemakers don't get the money until they agree to make movies the moneymen think will sell. Under those circumstances, it's a wonder anything worthwhile ever comes out of Hollywood.

That's true ruf, but back then it was in-house and, for the most part, scriptwriters were just another department on the lot. What I was saying was how much were screenwriters now self-censoring, knowing how much harder it will be to shop around something with scenes/themes that aren't commercial. With less films being made and the studios really only interested in big profits (and by big I mean £100m+) I'd say it's a much tougher market to get Hollywood to make a big film out of a script that's 'difficult' or 'challenging'. Obviously, as they're making them for 15 year old kids in Idaho, "difficult" and "challenging" aren't words that are going to sell anything.

I agree with what you said though. It's much like US network tv. Especially the comedy shows.

The only problem I have with remakes are that people hate them 'because' they are remakes.

Can't say I don't watch remakes because I'd be lying. But I refuse to watch those Hollywood remakes that aren't necessary at all.

For example: Spielberg wants desperately to remake Oldboy from Park Chan-wook. Is it really necessary? A Hollywood remake from a perfect Asian movie?

Another example: the remake of Let The Right One In (Swedish movie, 2008), another remake that is just not necessary.

The only problem I have with remakes are that people hate them 'because' they are remakes.

I can't judge all remakes with a broad statement. I don't like some remakes, and I do like others.

Well it depends on what the remake is being made on. If the movie that was the original was superb and the remake did not improve much and just made the original less great, I would say that remakes are horrible! But if the remake was made on a movie that originally sucked and was nothing great while the remake infused new life into the series I would say they are awesome!

So I say that remakes should only be made of movies that were suckish and great care should be taken while making them so the audience is not disappointed!

So I say that remakes should only be made of movies that were suckish and great care should be taken while making them so the audience is not disappointed!
Makes sense. Most remakes nowadays are terrible. (in my opinion anyway) so to try and improve a film that wasn't so great is a lot more beneficial to us viewers!

I'm mostly annoyed by remakes of classic horror films, they don't do anything for the films because the originals were great (Nightmare on elm street, Halloween, Friday the 13th etc)

You may find some of this throughout the boards but here's the list of sequels from my thread. I should be updating it soon. I kind of slacked off so my bad. Some of it may (or may not) be off a little.
