WWII movie with a bomber escorting a fighter?

In this movie I recall a fighter that was damaged or had no ammo and found a damaged lone B-17. They pilots agreed to fly together for safety as they were in enemy skies still.

It was in black and white, I'd assume mid 1940's early 1950's.

I never got to see the ending of this film and was just a kid. For so.e reason it has bothered me for over 30 years that I have never seen all of this movie.

I remember one scene where German fighters came after the bomber and the fighter tucked in close under the wing of the bomber so it's gunners had clear shots.

Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!

I remember reading a book with this described in it, but I've never seen a movie with it.

If I had to guess, I'd say it was in one of Martin Caidin's books - Fork-Tailed Devil: The P38 or Flying Forts, The B-17 in World War II. That's as close as I can get to it.

Thanks for the help. A good book isn't a bad thing by any means.

Fighter Squadron - 1948. One of my favourites. Must have seen it about a thousand times or more going back to my early childhood. Probably the best movie about P-47 Thunderbolts featuring loads of real footage, much of it genuine war time.
