50.

Cidade de Deus
a.k.a. City of God

(2002)

Quote: "A kid? I smoke, I snort. I've killed and robbed. I'm a man."

It tells the story of two boys growing up in a brazilian slum, the different choices they make and how hard it is to leave a world of violence if you are born in it!

It's probably the best portrait of the reality of a slum ever put into film. The cinematography and directing is masterpiece-material making every scene seem
frighteningly real!

Great movie! I hadn't seen it yet the last time I did a favorite list. It will be on my next one for certain. That movie makes me feel like I'm there.

Very good film. I recommended Bus 174 to someone else who liked City of God. It's a documentary about a guy who takes a whole bus load of people hostage in Rio, as well as footage it looks into his background as a street child. You can watch the whole documentary on youtube .

49.

Die Welle
(a.k.a. The Wave)

(2008)

Quote: "-So you don't think there could be another dictatorship in Germany?
-No, we are too enlightened now"

A german highschool teacher asks his students if they think that another Nazi-like dictatorship could happen in modern Germany! They immediately say that's impossible so he makes an experiment with them, creating a "club" with an ideology, a leader, a symbol, etc.
Quickly this social unit becomes something bigger than he thought and goes completely out of control!

This film is a very clever lesson in how do bad things begin! Every character idiosyncrasy reflects in some way a social group or a personality type and the way the psychology of group-thinking is shown is disturbing, at least! The performances of some students are really good too!

48.

Il buono, il bruto, il cattivo
a.k.a. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

(1966)

Quote: "You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig."

This movie needs no introduction!
A professional gunslinger and a wanted outlaw form an unstable alliance to find a great amount of gold buried in a cemetery! The two men have to deal with Angel Eyes, a hit man that's also trying to find the gold!

This is one of the best westerns ever made! The way tension is built and solved is only found in Leone's movies. The last scene is on my top 10 of favourite movie scenes - absolutely breath taking!
The direction, the acting, the cinematography, the dialogue and specially the soundtrack all team up to create a masterpiece!

Sergio Leone and Morricone, one of the best pair in the history of the cinema!

V for Vendetta

(2005)

Quote:
"Remember, remember, the 5th of November,
the Gunpowder, Treason and Plot.
I know of no-reason why the gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot!"

A mysterious men plots to destroy a tyranny in future England.

This is one of my guilty pleasures! Far from being a masterpiece, I can't stop loving this one! Highly quotable, dark, disturbing and with a very strong political message! This added to a good acting, great dialogues and a great soundtrack makes it very very entertaining!

46.

Big Bad Wolves

(2013)

Quote: "Maniacs are afraid of maniacs."

A series of little girls are kidnapped and found raped and headless afterwards! The father of one of those girls teams up with a detective trying to find the kidnapper! Once they find him they torture him so he would tell them where's the girl's head!

I saw this Israelit movie on my city's horror movie fest and I was totally amazed! It's disturbing, violent, psychologically twisted with a very well managed bit of dark comedy - just the way I like it!
The end is unsettling and I felt exaclty how I should in a great horror movie!
