Queen Cleopatra is coming to Netflix soon

Hello, my fellow film buffs! It is with great excitement that I write to you today about the upcoming Netflix series, Queen Cleopatra. As an avid lover of all movies and games, I have always been fascinated by the portrayal of historical figures on the screen, especially Cleopatra. I have even played Cleopatra-themed slots in online casinos and thoroughly enjoyed them. Needless to say, the mere announcement of a new series about this iconic queen has sent me into a frenzy of anticipation.

However, there are already disputes arising about the casting of the lead actress. Some Egyptians are protesting the decision to cast a black actress as Cleopatra, arguing that this goes against historical accuracy. As someone who loves movies and history, I can empathize with their concerns, but I also believe that an artist should have the freedom to create without limitations. After all, art is not merely a reflection of reality; it is an interpretation of it.

Besides, Cleopatra's ethnicity has always been a subject of debate, with some historians arguing that she was of Greek ancestry, while others claim that she was of Syrian, Persian, or even African descent. Ultimately, however, the most important aspect of any Cleopatra portrayal is whether the actor captures the queen's intelligence, wit, beauty, and charisma - irrespective of their ethnic background.

In conclusion, I am incredibly excited about the release of this series and look forward to seeing how the creators interpret the life of one of history's most fascinating women. Let us hope that the series will do justice to her legacy and bring her story to a new generation of viewers in a respectful and engaging manner.

Cleopatra was a descendant of the Ptolemaic dynasty, a Greek dynasty started by a diadochos of Alexander the Great named Ptolemy I Soter. Saying that there is no historical consensus as to whether she was white is blissful ignorance at best and deliberate manipulation at worst. Taking into account all available evidence we have, the only sustainable conclusion is that Cleopatra was indeed white. The "my grandma always told me she was black" argument from this documentary series is among the most laughable I've ever heard. Documentaries are usually far from the best source of knowledge on history, but one would require a minimum of historical accuracy from a film that purports to be "A Netflix Documentary".

I'm yet to hear a convincing argument from people defending Queen Cleopatra. And you can dismantle them all really easily. Here are four I hear the most often:
1. "Hollywood whitewashed everything so we have to fight back!" Yes, Hollywood had been whitewashing historical figures for decades. But it doesn't mean it's time to blackwash history. Both are equally wrong. You can't fix wrong with wrong. Two wrongs don't make a right.
2. "It's art and therefore artistic license allows them to do whatever they want!" Black people in fiction is another conversation. Here's an example of a film where a black Cleopatra would be acceptable: An alternative history satire hotpot (or "alternative reality" fanfic) that has Cleopatra black, Hitler Asian, and Napoleon attacking America. However, a documentary must be historically accurate and not a tinfoil hat ballyhoo. Otherwise, we're literally teaching people lies.
3. "We need to tell stories about strong black queens to celebrate black people!" Fair, but you don't do that by telling a story about a white queen. Do you need a black strong warrior queen? Why not talk about the kandake Amanirenas who bested the Romans in battle? Hell, there are so many other kandakes, actually an entire dynasty of them you can create a multi-season series!
4. "It doesn't even matter if she's played by a black actress!" It does matter. And if you doubt that, imagine a documentary on Martin Luther King Jr. where he's played by Ed Sheeran.

That this is even a subject of debate and that it turned political (and not merely historical) is disappointing. But the strong backlash and the super-low ratings for Queen Cleopatra around the internet give me some hope that we're not lost yet, that people see this as inherently wrong and strongly show their opposition.

I've heard it's getting trashed. According to this guy the entire country of Egypt is strapping on their bread hats and ready to go to war. I wonder how much of it has to do with Jada Pinkett Smith being one of the producers.

Yeah, I'd only be willing to take her money as a producer if she were a silent partner. Her brand is damaged. Let her throw some money at a project, let it get celebrated, and then let her reveal that she was the angel investor, when it is too late to people to get BIG MAD about it before it has a chance to find an audience. Putting her mug upfront, however, is basically an invitation for motivated scrutiny.

I mean if you want to defend it I suggest you watch it...I thought it was one of the worst things I've ever seen.

I can understand how Egyptians were not okay with their entire history being co-opted for blatant and transparent identity politics.

Had they just done a crappy low budget movie it would have been bad but in a C-/D+ sort of way. But the fact it's a "documentary" where the experts are just giving out opinions that don't seem accurate or based in reality at all

I've seen enough of these crappy docu-dramas on The History Channel to know what to expect. I don't much like the right but I'm not gonna sit through this for the sake of some half-assed virtue signaling. And for the record, Pinkett Smith's involvement just seals the deal.

Stealing other culture's historical figures and usurping them to fit one's racist ideas is all kinds of wrong. Shame on you Jada Pinkett Smith you need to be boycotted.

And shame on Netflix for bringing George Orwell's 1984 'Ministry of Truth' to fruition. There's an attempt to rewrite history here when a show tagged Documentary promotes a bigoted idea and changes Cleopatra from Mediterranean/Macedonia/Greek heritage to black. Why not tell the real stories of black African kings and queens who did really exist in ancient history and who's stories are all but unknown today. That would've been a culturally important documentary instead of this lie.
