Uncensored video of Will Smith and Chris Rock at the Oscars

Tools

I often make the joke that Bad Boys or Bad Boys II can always be found on TV (and it's almost literal as I see it somewhere in the guide virtually everyday).

This is only notable because a movie I'd LIKE to see is also called Bad Boys (from 1983) - starring Sean Penn, about a boy's detention center. (I actually first saw this movie at a local Drive-In!)

Unlike the Will Smith / Martin Lawrence jaunt, the original Bad Boys is almost never found on TV (at least on any regular basis).

Who needs TV when you have low-res YouTube copies with Spanish subs?

Last time I saw Bad Boys (1983) on TV was an airing on PBS (they'll often have a Saturday night double feature with a known movie followed by an Independent or lesser-known movie) - which was actually very cool as it was unedited and had no commercials!

The damage Will Smith did was four fold:

1st damage was to Chris Rock's psyche. Rock as a stand up comedian depends on his fast wit and comic reflexes. Threats of violence and death threats are a factor for celebrities, so no doubt when Rock is in front of a live audience somewhere in the back of his mind will be that attack by Will Smith and a new heightened awareness of random violence from the live audience. Yes he's a victim.

2nd damage was to the integrity and respectability of the Academy Awards. Those in charge of the awards have no doubt stressed over what if anything they should do about Will Smith's behaviour and future attendance of the Oscars. Smith turned a celebrated event into a reality show and s*** all over the Oscars.

3rd damage was to his wife Jada. Undoubtedly Smith's behavior at the awards has caused Jada a lot of stress. Publicly she'll need to stand up for husband but this event has no doubt put her in a tough spot.

4th damage
is to Will Smith himself. I always got the feeling he had deep seated troubles. He might have momentarily felt like a victor after the slap, but I bet anything he's feeling pretty low about himself and what he's done to his career. I bet then Oscar nominations will be fewer and actual wins unlikely, at least for awhile.

I'd be very surprised that he ever receives another nomination, but he will NEVER win anoher Oscar. I'm pretty sure among the actions the Academy will take is that he will be forbidden to attend the ceremony forever, even if he is nominated.

Somewhat off topic, but the last post got me thinking about memorable Will Smith movies and one was Seven Pounds (2008).

While maybe not Oscar material, it was just a really original story that kept you guessing until the end and was an emotional tear-jerker.
It really surprised me because I wasn't expecting something so deep coming from a Will Smith movie (especially as it came on the heels of I Am Legend and Hancock).

Unfortunately, I and others will now have to attempt to separate the person from the work as with other actors who've had personal controversies tarnish their artistic contributions.

Well this was totally unexpected.

Rehab to handle the stress? Of having to deal with the repercussions of assaulting someone? He's still coming off like an entitled a-hole as far as I'm concerned.

Ha, god, that is ridiculous. Reminds me of how I took a week off after having had to fire a junior. It is a bit ridiculous, sure.

His PR team deserves a raise! That was a brilliant ploy to shift the blame off of Will Smith and make him out to be a victim. I told you guys we'd be hugging Will in the future

You’re not wrong I think.

He should have been nominated for Seven Pounds

More so now haha

I feel like this punishment really isn't a big deal. I think it would be unfair for them to have taken back his Oscar, but I would have liked to see a pause in him being able to receive further nominations for a period of time, especially given that they took no action to remove him at the time of the incident.

I was personally waiting for the Academy's decision to have Will Smith eaten by a bunch of parrots trained to call him a cuck, but I imagine most birds don't want to be mistaken for incels, so it was never to be.

Oh, well. I guess this was the second best option.

That seems like a fair punishment.

So, supposing he wins? What? Do they do the Roman Polanski TV feed?

If I were running the Academy the announcement would be, "Accepting on behalf of Will Smith is Chris Rock."
