I had heard nothing about Perfume: A Story of a Murderer before I watched it. Strange, but none of my friends had seen it before me, and I had missed any buzz about it. I was so enthralled with this movie, I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. And the story! How unique it was, I couldn't believe how well it was told. So, the movie might not have been surprising to those that follow film, but it was a surprising movie to me.
Most Surprising Film of the Year:

I was expecting yet another rushed Stephen King adaptation with an actor whom I really like, but couldn't really imagine in the role. I thought that if Cusack wasn't good the film would fail, since it relies mostly on his shoulders.
To my surprise it was thrilling, intense, scary and one of the years best films. I believe it brought back the horror genre that was slowly being taken over by the "torture-porn" films.

Knocked up. I was expecting some teen comedy type bs (I think the posters were a bit misleading), but it's real life humor was quite refreshing...

On the basis of the disparity between the potential inanity and crassness of the premise and the totally engaging and winning movie that it actually turned out to be, Lars and the Real Girl was such a pleasant, wonderful surprise.

Waitress...loved it.
Now dont hate on me but Harry Potter - best of the series with a director who knows what hes doing resulted in the best fight scenes and the amazing Imelda Staunton.
Simpsons movie - surprisingly rubbish
Blades of glory - thought it would be trashy rubbish but it has become a firm favourite with my flatmates, it gets funnier as time goes on
The Science Of Sleep - if anyone missed this charming lil thang then beat yourself with reeds. It has all the european charm and sweetness of Amelie with the encouraged surrealism of a monty python movie. Gael Garcia Bernal is so endearing you just want to hug him
Freedom writers - a little unbelievable but pretty good, i thought it was gonna be another dangerous minds thing but it came from the kids point of view a lot more so you could understand why their lives were like that which was nice
Fred Claus - i tend to hate them, but as holiday movies go this was a good combination of schmaltz and comedy form vince vaughn who looks like he hasnt slept in a year

No Country For Old Men. I honestly heard or knew nothing about it until about a few weeks ago, when it started getting 5-star reviews everywhere I looked.
What was really surprising is that it really was worth 5 stars.

The most surprising 'how could they get it so worng' film was The Golden Compass which tossed aside the soul and magic from the books and gave us rather a flat, insipid film.

For me the biggest surprise this year is Alvin and The Chipmunks, when I first saw the trailer I thought "Oh god," but look now, it is getting the lowest reviews, one critic even said this "For adults, it's like being hit over the head with a mallet every 10 seconds for 90 minutes." but yet, this is a box-office monster, open only for about 3 weeks, yet it is already #13 on the the 2007 Yearly Box Offic Results, with only being about 6 mil, under Knocked up.

i've thought about this and having not seen (due to my horrible theater selection) some of the better titles out (no country, juno, there will be blood, etc...) I have three title that i will share
1) rescue dawn... bale is one of our best actors out there and when will this guy grab an oscar
2) Mr. Brooks... i just loved the creativity of this seemingly done to death genre
3) Charlie Wilson's War... Give Hoffman all the awards there are to give out.. what an actor

Transformer Pirates of the Caribbean 3 Spiderman 3 Die Hard 4.0 Beowulf
The above films plus:
She's the man, Atonement (kiera knightley), National Treasure: Book of Secrets, The golden compass...
The most surprising film for me was Hairspray. I didn't even plan on watching it, but my daughter wanted to see it, so I ended up seeing it twice and found it totally joyous.
