So glad that The ascent won... I first nominated it because it was my top favorite movie by a female director ever. I'll comment on my rewatch a bit later (I'm writing this on my phone right now), my thoughts remain the same for the most part though.

The rest of the list I can't say I'm in much of an agreement, but I'm also glad that A girl walks home alone at night went so high. It was only my 4th, but I grew quite fond of it.

My remaining top3, Orlando and Morvern Callar weren't that well-received it seems, but I loved both and a lot more than expected.

At this point i'd be shocked if it even happens.

A bit late to the party but here is the comment on my nom:


As said, this was my favorite movie directed by a woman when I nominated it. This rewatch has brought a couple little changes to my impressions:

-The first one is more of a neutral one. When I first watched the movie I thought of it as mix of Dreyer and Kalatozov. Now it's not that clear to me. It is clear that the movie takes inspiration from The passion of Joan of Arc, but despite the presence of some really inspired compositions, I don't think it is close to the levels of visual language that were typical of Kalatozov, so it was a bit of an overstated comparison on my part. Either way, it looks great, just not the level of amazing and visually daring that director could reach.

-The second is a nitpick and may drive me to give a second thought to my current consideration of the film. I like the obvious religious parallels but the symbolism at times feels quite heavy-handed. It is not supposed to be really subtle in that field but rather evocative and expressive, and at some points I do think it went too far with its referential imagery.

Either way, this was still fantastic in the rewatch. The first tracking shot is absolutely stunning, the scenes at the snow are tense and you can really feel the cold and the struggle, and as a war film I like its focus on character drama through an introspective lens. In fact and while the rest is also great, I think the movie picks up when they arrive at the woman's house, and the ride since then is amazing.

As said, the religious undertones are everywhere, but the movie talks about something more mundane and earthly, which is the fragility and strength of will. Both Sotnikov and Rybak are understandable despite being polar opposites, and both are excellently performed. The movie is not that subtle in portraying Sotnikov as the hero that is worth of praise and Rybak as the pathetic traitor, as it uses a lot of visual and metaphorical emphasis, but the thing is that Shepitko manages to do something great with this: where Sotnikov obviously gets her sympathy, Rybak gets her empathy. And without necessarily compromising the message of the movie, it shows that she cares for both characters, in different ways, but observing both with either admiration or understanding. You could extend that to the other characters, particularly the mother who has some of the most heartbreaking scenes by the end.

As a movie that is clearly Soviet in theme and emphasis, with an ode to camaraderie and self-sacrifice for the collective, The ascent also gets the pathos right when talking about the other side and makes you understand and pity Rybak without ever siding with him, making the words by Sotnikov resonate: "Then go and live... without your conscience. You can live that way" in the brilliance of those last scenes that are among the most painful and distressing I've ever seen.

Glad to see The Ascent win. Congrats!

The bottom two are the only ones that I would say that I don't like, but both have enough good qualities to make them interesting nominations. Take This Waltz deserves better, dammit! My nom performed as I expected. I figured it would place well but wouldn't win. Fun hof overall. Not an all-time classic, but nowhere near a dud. A good, workmanlike performance here. Good stuff, ladies.

11) Nothing Bad Can Happen Talk about feeling bad for someone!!!! The ONLY reason this was last place was the torture that went out in the second half of this film. I definitely see why Cricket nominated it, considering how well done it was and, beyond the second half this has SERIOUS conversation potential on a number of levels.

Having Tilda's role at #1 and the movie at #9 definitely says a lot on how much I enjoy her.

Just realized i still have how the list was looking with American Psycho included, i know no one really cares but i thought i may as well post it before deleting everything. Oddly like The Last Supper it was the only one that remained in the same position: second last. Had Yam finished he and Hashtag would have presumably have had it high, JJ was lukewarm on it though and not sure what Jal would have thought. Think it would have still finished in the bottom half but probably a couple places higher. Bale also had a few votes for the performance thing, he most likely would have finished around the middle.
