Stop me if you've heard this before: love this film, not on my list (only 1 Scorsese - RB). I guess we'll get #2 2001 and #1 The Godfather now, both on my list.

# 22
GoodFellas 1990 Martin Scorsese

Had Goodfellas in my top 22 last year, this year I went with another favorite of mine that's more of a cult classic crime masterpiece, but more about that one when I reveal my ballot.

^ Al Pacino in Dick Tracy..

Goodfellas is a good watch and no surprise to see it up at the business end of the countdown but it's not particularly a favourite of mine.

Seen: 88/98 (Own: 48/98)
My list:

Faildictions (Eternal vsn 1.0):
2. The Godfather (1972)
1. 2001: A Space Ofyssey (1968)

Goodfellas made my final list of 37, but obviously had to cut 12 and it was one of the cuts. It could have made it on a different day maybe. After Hours was another of those cuts.
I didn't vote for any Scorsese films, but if I had it would have been After Hours.

The only thing I can think of that I have never liked about GoodFellas is the poster. The one sheet was so unimaginative and seemed to usher in the "floating heads" design that come into vogue (ick). Here are a few nice pieces designed by fans (the middle one commissioned by the BFI). I would take just about anything over the campaign Warner Brothers actually went with. I had the original poster hanging in my room when I was in my twenties, and looking at it daily made me dislike it even more strongly. Amazing movie, lousy poster.

Goodfellas is great. It didn't make my list, but it's definitely a great film. While the narrative contains a decent bit of bloat, the genius is that it's so well-directed in the way it moves along that you don't even notice its bloat. Its pacing feels incredibly tight. Beyond that, it's also a blast to watch on tv. Every 5 minutes, another great scene pops up. With that being said, I think a decent portion of the film fans miss the point of the film by only viewing it as a fun film. Beyond that lies a darker undercurrent of how Henry Hill lived in terror of being killed by the other people in his gang. I've seen the film a few times and this aspect has impacted me more with each subsequent viewing. I like how The Irishman seemed to act as a response to everyone who missed the point of this film.

Sorry if I'm rude but I'm right
Seconded. Scorsese is only a decent director. I like him much more as a patron of arts and cinephile.

Seen Goodfellas, liked it, didn't make my list. I've already gone over my struggles with Scorsese so I won't get into it. But I always like to reiterate that I don't dislike his films (with maybe one or two exceptions), but they just don't stick with me. C'est la vie...

I was careful to say just about anything. But it does manage to make the original poster art seem palatable by comparison.

Here's another good'un, if perhaps too focused on the opening minutes of the narrative...

Welcome to the human race...
I've seen Casablanca once and it was well over a decade ago. I liked it well enough and have been meaning to give it another shot. Maybe if David Fincher makes a movie about it getting written, I guess.

Goodfellas was my #9. I distinctly remember first watching it on free-to-air TV when I was about ten years old because it got a good write-up in the local TV guide and that was the first I'd heard of it, but as a youth who was obviously used to more conventional and family-friendly fare at the time (think the edgiest movie I'd seen by that point might've just been The Blues Brothers because it had f-bombs and jokes about used condoms), I saw it as a borderline-plotless barrage of obnoxious characters acting like idiots and doing pointless crimes. Then again, I suppose that would be an accurate description even if you liked the movie (which I eventually learned to after coming back to it a few years later). Now it's also become a fixture of my personal cinematic canon, and while I gave Taxi Driver a slight edge in my ballot, I am not about to argue with the idea that it is Scorsese's true masterpiece.

(also the hell you say Holden, at least with The Departed I could watch it more than once, which is more than I've been able to say about Gone Baby Gone or The Town)

In general he's fine. taxi driver is a masterpiece. yeah, TAXI DRIVER :3
but this one has not much of an appeal for me. the same with a typical thing like casino or wolf or Wallstreet. just generic Scorsese's formula. okay films but that's it.

I like him much more as a patron of arts and cinephile.

Goodfellas is my 4th favorite Scorsese film but a **** out of ***** for sure.

The Departed, Taxi Driver and Casino (yeah, I know) are better IMO. But still a brilliant masterpiece that is worth the acclaim it receives.

It's entertaining, fast paced, has great characters and a very good storyline regarding the fall and start of a gangster.

Also, did TDK miss the list? I can't be the only one who still likes it as much as I did in 2008 XD

Goodfellas is an excellent film but I have no personal love in my heart for gangster films in general, so this, like The Godfather Part II before and The Godfather tomorrow, did not make my list. However, my wife did once run into Debi Mazar (who played Sandy) on the subway, so that was nice.

Wow! Just curious, did she see Paul Reubens as well? I know they were an item for a while.
