++++++++++++

As you all know, this is my all time favorite movie. It is the perfect Scorsese movie IMO (no offense Cob ), and Scorsese's masterpiece. I have already gone into this slow burn of a movie. Another fantastic viewing experience. And since I have watched and analyzed it before, this allows me to pay attention to things I have missed in the background. Like how in previous viewing when I first noticed Scorsese is in a Hitchcock like cameo right behind Betsy as she is introduced for the firs time. Or when I first realized that the concession girl at the porn theater Travis tries to get to know was Dianne Abbott (who Bobby would go on to marry in real life). As well as be in The King of Comedy.

Well today was no different. Found a few other interesting things in the background while I was watching this movie.

1. When Travis is driving up and down New York City I always like to take in what places he passes and in particular to see what is playing at the movies at that time. Previous watches I noticed that such listings included the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and when Travis takes Betsy to the porno movie on their date, I knew the movie playing across the street was The Eiger Sanction with Clint Eastwood. What I did NOT notice until now was that Bucktown was also across the street. Meaning there is an indirect (and unintentional) reference to a Fred Williamson and PAM GRIER movie!

2. I have been calling the gun dealer Fast Eddie all these years, when it is actually Easy Andy. How did I mess that up?

3. Travis has a lot of porno mags under his bed. In the scene right after he does the famous "You talking to me?" scene, he is on his bed during the voice over narration, and I see what appear to be porn mags, and one of them is called "Discipline." Had no clue Travis was THAT kinky...

4. When talking about the commune with Iris and he says "I don't get along with people like that" it finally connected that Travis hates hippies. Just like any good Marine.

5. In the scene where the newspaper clips are being shown, the first clippings are large complete with photos and diagrams of the crime scene. In the clipping where Travis is announced he will recover the clipping is smaller like the first part of an column article. The final clipping saying he was released was very tiny. Just like the sensationalist news media...

I'd rank his films I've seen so far as something like this:
  1. Goodfellas

  2. Taxi Driver

  3. Raging Bull

  4. After Hours

  5. The Wolf of Wall Street

  6. The King of Comedy

  7. Shutter Island

  8. The Departed

The Aviator- I've a feeling it is a film I will really like.
Gangs of New York

The Wolf of Wall Street- everyone love it, I've been meaning to see it.

Oh, but then I'd have to join so many other groups. Too lazy for that right now

At first I felt kinda depressed because I thought it was only members of the fanclub that were allowed to participate in discussions. But then I saw this:

Goodfellas 8.5/10
Casino 8.5/10

Shutter Island 6.5/10
Hugo 6.5/10

Absolutely love The Departed, After Hours, Goodfellas, and Casino. But really not a bad film in the lot. My least favorite is Hugo, but it isn't bad.

As I have watched more and more Scorsese, and after seeing The Wolf of Wall Street recently, I've realized I love him best when he is doing more comedic films -- After Hours and King of Comedy are favorites of mine . I'm not sure, these films continue to thrill me more than his most canonized films now; I'm much more eager to go to these than, say, Goodfellas or Taxi Driver

Oh, but then I'd have to join so many other groups. Too lazy for that right now
Be a gangster, f*ck my rules and just post a list of director fan clubs you'd like to join in the main thread.

Anyway, I find it really hard to rank Scorsese's films. I'll go with categories (the films are not in order):

In a league of its own:

Goodfellas

Masterpieces:

Taxi Driver
Raging Bull
After Hours

Brilliant:

Casino
The Wolf of Wall Street

Fantastic:

The Aviator
New York, New York
The King of Comedy

VERY good:

Shutter Island
The Departed

Good:

Gangs of New York
Cape Fear
Mean Streets
The Color of Money
Bringing Out the Dead

As you can see, I like all of the films I've seen from him so far.

My top five favorites:

Taxi Driver
Goodfellas
The King of Comedy
After Hours
Raging Bull

I've seen all his major films, except Kundun, which I have a copy of, but the subject matter just doesn't appeal to me. Eventually, I'll see it. The films of his I like the least are The Last Temptation of Christ, Who's That Knocking at My Door, Bringing Out the Dead, and Shutter Island. I've seen Boxcar Bertha once, and I can barely remember anything about it. Everything else I like a lot or flat out love.

I may go back to hating you. It was more fun.

I actually re watched quite a bit of Gangs of New York the other night. A strange film because Scorsese gets freedom to spend a load of money and get the details right, splashing out on elaborate sets and other design aspects, yet the film just does not work as a whole.

I think with his chance to make a 'big budget epic' he went to over the top and self-indulgent, and lost track of the story and heart of the film. It's far too long, and feels very pantomime like in its style. I don't understand the decision to cast Cameron Diaz, and even though I'm normally a fan, I find Leonardo Di Caprio a little bit annoying with his ever changing accent.

The only thing that keeps me interested is Daniel Day-Lewis who is fantastic as the eccentric villain, but about the time the second act finishes, the suspense is gone and the final act seems to drag on forever with stuff that I couldn't care about.

Does anyone here, really like the movie?
