The MoFo Comic Book Movies List

Before we get started, there's been a bit of talk in the now jacked RoboCop thread

The aim of this thread at the moment, is to define how much interest there would be in a MoFo Comic Book Movies List.

Basically, if it's a movie and was based on a Comic, it counts.
I'd make a cut off point with dates as "Released In Cinemas Before 31st August 2013" so as to include as many as we can.

I'd be more than happy to do the list myself unless someone else reckons they could do it (open to volunteers ) but I would need a second member who can work Excel so we can keep track of the scores.

If I did it, I'd be looking at a MoFo Top 50 Comic Book Movies. There are enough out there to make a Top 50 without having stuff like Catwoman and Howard The Duck making appearances.

Also, would you like a Comic Book List... or a Superhero List? Or even the possibility of making two lists?

So... thoughts?

Ok… Rules for the Comics List. Using the same rules as were used in Harry’s 90s list and Skepsis’ 80s list.

In keeping with what I said before, I’ll hold this list for General Comics rather than just for solely Superhero films.

The regulations on choices are:

Simply, it should be based on a comic book or graphic novel. Whether live action or animated, if it is a feature length film, it counts.

Made-For-TV Movies (example: Black Scorpion 1995 and Dr Strange 1978), Direct-To-Video/DVD (example: Darkman II and Man Thing 2005) Animated TV Series, Live Action TV Series and Documentaries about comic book films don’t count.

There is no time limit for the films per say, but a cut-off point will be September 1st 2013, the beginning of this month. Only films that were released before August 31st 2013 will count.

If you do want to pick 25 Superhero Movies as your entries, that’s perfectly fine as long as they are based on comics and/or graphic novels.
So the choice is yours.

Submit your ranked list (1-25, no ties) to me via PM with the title "Your Username - MoFo Comics List".
You have plenty of time to consider and submit your list, so no changing it once you've submitted it to me.
Also, please add the year after each film as it will make it easier to know which film exactly you’re voting for.

New members can send in a list as soon as they've been a member here for one month. This measure is taken so that the list isn't influenced by members who've been on here for a week and then pack their bags and never come back.

Films that are part of a series or trilogy etc (Iron Man, Nolan’s Batman, etc etc etc) must be submitted as separate films.

Any movie listed on the following Wiki Pages is eligible for the list. Just be sure to check that any you pick fall in to the rules of the List, no TV Movies, Documentaries etc as I mentioned above.

Those revealing their lists before the countdown has ended will be disqualified. That just defeats the point of the whole thing.

As per usual, films will be awarded points as follows: 25 points for 1st place, 24 points for 2nd place, 23 for 3rd and so on.

The deadline for entries is 31st March 2014. The actual Countdown will begin in April.
This gives well over 6 months to get entries in and counted up.
Plenty of time to catch up on what you want to see and get your lists in!

The list will be called: The MoFo Top 50 Comic Book Movies
Being a Top 50 will make it slightly tougher and will be basically a cream of the crop list based on votes, yet also more satisfying when one of your picks makes it.

Happy listing!!

RULES AND REGS FOR YOUR LISTS ARE ALSO SHOWNON PAGE 2 OF THIS THREAD

Ok, edited that first post extensively to include full lists of movies based on both Comic Books and Superheroes.

Keep on Rockin in the Free World
i have zero interest in non english adaptations.

And mark me down as a guy that sees comic books and thinks super hero time.

A History of Violence is a graphic novel which for me, right or wrong isnt the same as a comic book.

Amen to doing anything that keeps Catwoman out.

I wouldn't mind either comic book or just superhero movies, because my list will be mostly superhero anyways

Maybe it should be comic books, so more people will be able to join in.

As for foreign and other language stuff, I have no idea, but I have no problem with it.

You've both brought up a point that I just added to the OP.

Maybe two lists... Comics in general, and a second Superhero only list.

As for foreign... the thing is, a lot of comic films are based on foreign comics... yet have been filmed in Hollywood and made in English.

It seems this is a very broad media with many terms and conditions.

Two lists could work.

Superhero one could be like 10-20. Comic book one can go up pretty high.

Yeah, I would totally be fine with foreign additions. It would add some nice variety. I will definitely have some manga based films in there, so...

I could do a General Comic Book List if someone, (maybe Dex?), would want to do a Superhero List???

They'd be fun lists for sure... lots of disparate choices.

Seems to be some interest building then.

Let's leave it going for a few days, see how much more interest is gathered.

I realize theres a difference between Spider-Man, Iron Man vs say a more graphic read like Sin City, The Walking Dead. There are alot others. I just encourage there to be one list. Yes that even means if Archie and 300 share the same list. Splitting it up sort of devalues the genre as a whole. The camelot of comic books popularity isnt what it was, but the overall storytelling hasnt ever been deeper.

Women will be your undoing, Pépé
depending on how large of interest may coincide with a variety of lists, but i am intrigued and doing one for comics, of a wide variety and then one for super heroes sounds very doable

I think with enough interest, I'll get rules together for a General Comic Book Film list so as to include everything from Superman to Sin City and from Captain America to 300.

Splitting it up sort of devalues the genre as a whole.
What genre? The graphic novel is a medium and there is every genre represented. Movies covering pretty much every genre have been made based on graphic novels (with the possible exception of pure art films, I guess).

The camelot of comic books popularity isnt what it was, but the overall storytelling hasnt ever been deeper.
What are you talking about? Manga sales in Japan have been steady at around 6 billion dollars over the past 20 years. Comic book sales in the US have reached 400 million dollars recently, Europe is also very large (probably larger than the US). Brazil also has a prosperous comic book market:
