Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi

Tools

Re-watched all of the Star Wars movies over the past few weeks in preparation for TLJ. Just got my tickets for Sunday. My excitement level is off the charts.
Keep your expectation low, my friend, then you can enjoy TLJ better.

Not gonna lie, despite certain flaws with The Force Awakens I still really enjoyed it. Then I saw Rogue One and thought it was just okay (bad ass second half though to be fair). But after the trailer to Last Jedi I was very hesitant to allow myself to get excited.

After seeing some of the early reports and a few random screen shots I fear my concern might be legitimate. I will not know for certain until I see it for myself.

I will try to get to an early show tomorrow before work.

It is not a disaster film by all means, but make sure you keep your expectation very low, you might enjoy it even.

@Dirk120

All I can do really. Hopefully I don’t have to apologize to George Lucas for all the prequel bashing I did when I was in high school and college.
LOL You might be actually. Lucas is not that bad until you see the new low.

The prequel had better plot and more originality, imo.

I bet Cinemascore rates this a D+

Feel free, fanboy.
Woah, chill. I'm not sure why you're calling me a "fanboy." I just love the direction they're taking. That coupled with the polarizing series of events, layered-conflicts, dark themes; I suppose you felt cold after watching this.
Read my spoiler filled post in this page.

If I was a fanboy; I'd probably salivate over Rogue One just because of the dark tone, the action, and that Vader scene. I'm not the one who prefers The Phantom Menace here. I'm pretty sure the majority of the human population hates that movie.

Lemme ask you something, how would you do this film? How would you make it "better?" Please, I would really like to hear. Take all day if you have to.

And for the record, regardless of what Dirk's opinion is; I'm not upset, angry, or "triggered" by anything that you people say, including his. I'm just curious about the backlash. Don't mean to be rude If I come off that way.

Also, I'm probably getting 'Battlefront II' for Christmas. Yeah, I know It's gotten so-so reviews. And It probably won't be 'Jedi Academy' or anything like that... but f**k it. IT'S STAR WARS! (Now THAT'S being a blind fanboy. )

Simple. I wrote things I disliked in my own post, if all of those were fixed, the movie will be great. And to fix those were actually not that hard.

Luke Skywalker

WARNING: "plot" spoilers below

I'm actually angry at what they have done to the character.

The original trilogy is about his rise to become a Jedi and effectively defeat the Sith. He does this, becomes a legend as The Last Jedi states.

Then what? In the expanded Universe he becomes this immensely powerful character and fully rebuilds the Jedi order, overcoming countless hurdles.

Nope, these new movies would have us believe that in the 35 years since ROTJ he has basically been an utter failure and effectively ran away to die.

We even get an entire movie dedicated to finding him, and when they do he is an old crackpot, not even a fake one like Kenobi but an actual one living like a hermit on his Island. His only worthy use is to destroy the stupid Jedi/Sith rules set up by Lucas, Jedi don't couple and breed, there are always 2 Sith, even Kylo says this later. Luke sets up the new rules, someone do a Dua Lipa parody please.

We get teased in the trailer, Luke on the Falcon bridge, then in the film Luke's X-Wing under the water, but nope he isn't leaving just gonna fade away after providing some help and not much training.

Presume Luke will be returning sporadically as Force ghost though, just whenever Rey is in need of some advice. I just feel we've been deprived of a last grand show before Luke went off to become one with the Force. His final non present deed serving as a metaphor for his whole appearance in these movies.

some other niggles

WARNING: "plot" spoilers below

After TFA there was tons of Snoke hype, who is he?? How big is he? Darth Plaugus, Emperor Palpatines master?? All for nothing as he gets about 5 minutes screen time and a very weak death. This is the guy who Luke will face down, nope then double nope later.

Rey's parents, again loads of hype, teasers from TFA, looking for my family etc, and apparently turns out they are nobodies.

Boring sidequests, who wasn't bored with Finn and chick looking for codebreaker in Casino town, boring boring boring. The escape on the Horsedog boring, so predictable, oh look they nearly went off the cliff, never seen that happen, oh what a surprise BB8 and thief codebreaker have stolen the ship, who would've guessed it. Finn on his own sucks, at least he will be with Rey most likely in next one.

Finn and chick in ship hanger surrounded by hundreds of guards and Brienne, big explosion and wouldn't you know it Finn, chick and Brienne are pretty much sole survivors.

It has clearly been decided early on to use the old trio as a Baton to pass the franchise onto the new stars, Han gets his movie then kill him, Luke and Leia heavily in this one then kill Luke, but bizarrely keep Leia despite a deceased Carrie Fisher. Perhaps they simply couldn't reshoot or change it. Maybe they plan to recast, hopefully not going the Paul Walker route, or Rogue One with CGI deceased actors.

Has it worked though? I'm invested in Kylo Ren and Rey, both great characters but is there much to look forward to apart from their story? Poe Dameron is a good character and good actor and surely Ep 9 will feature a build up of forces to take down The First Order battle of Endor style, and Poe can get back in an X-Wing again. Finn has shown that he is a weak character on his own.

Regarding the above I don't see much potential for spin offs outside the Main episodes. Suppose that's why we are getting Han Solo prequel, Kenobi prequel, Rogue Squadron prequel rumoured and god knows what other prequel.

Ok rant over, now to resume the wait for Game of Thrones finale now that this disappointing distraction is out the way.

5/10 (or lower not sure yet)

Snoke vs Luke: Force-Ghost Face-off!

To put it in perspective in terms of critic scores vs public scores. Using Metacritic.

The Force Awakens- Critics 81 (out of 100) Public 6.9 (out of 10)

Revenge of the Sith- Critics 68 Public 7.6

Attack of the Clones- Critics 54 Public 5.9

Empire Strikes Back- Critics 81 (not many reviews for obv reasons) Public 9.0 (over 1000 reviews)

The Last Jedi- Critics 86 Public 5.3

You cant really use the argument, "people only rate it if they hate it" as TFA received A LOT of hate but still scored 6.9 from public, but a 5.3 (and going lower from yesterday) from the fans suggests they hate it, that's a score from 700+ reviewers so far, TFA had over 7000 user reviews.

Holy **** as I type this it's down to a 5.2. The critics are way off on this one it seems, corporate whores.

You can't win an argument just by being right!
I might get crap for this,
Who cares. If you enjoyed it that's all that matters. The positive reviews in this thread have made me enthusiastic to see it so keep it coming. My favourite will always be a new hope because it was part of my childhood, but I'll still see this one.
