"Apple has given a 10-episode straight-to-series order to an English adaptation of the popular French short-form series Calls, which will be co-produced by Canal+. It marks Apple’s first greenlighted international series and its first international co-production.

Created by Timothée Hochet, Calls takes storytelling innovation to the next level, allowing audiences to experience short stories through real-life audio sources and minimal visuals.

As part of the deal, Apple also has acquired the rights to the existing season of the original French series, which aired last year."

Official Synopsis:

Sound Recordings from the black box of an airplane, cassettes of a tape recorder, messages left on an answering machine or calls to police rescue, can testify to tragic events that occurred at different times, but all connected in one way or another to an impending Apocalypse.

Such a unique concept wasted now that Apple insists on making their streaming service entirely family-friendly. After watching the short there's no doubt the potential this has. This isn't something to be restricted, especially when it's meant to play on the imagination.

Family friendly service, this will fail. Disney will reign king there.

Suspect's Reviews

With no actual video drama, it'll be interesting to see how this plays. I like the idea of a radio type production, ala War of the Worlds and others. Personally I wish radio dramas and comedies were still available. They allow folks to use their imaginations.

Watched (heard?) the first episode. The voice acting isn't bad, there was just no real tension or buildup. Felt very rushed. Also, you'd think they'd utilize sound effects and music more to help build that tension. Worked really well in the original. Meh. Hopefully it gets better.
