downs: So. A large part of today was spent reflecting on last sunday, because the 11-year old twin daughter of a lady I know in FL hung herself in her bedroom closet last sunday. Apparently, she was went to church that morning, and found the prospect of "hell" so humorous and idiotic, that when she was at home later with her siblings she mockingly mimed hanging herself with a belt so she could go there.
Except it really happened.
The mom went out to store, leaving the 16year old brother on the computer in the front room, one 11year old twin sleeping in a bedroom, and the other 11year old twin in another bedroom playing with her 5year old sister.
She and her little sister were discussing the prospect of Hell, and so she told her 5 year old sister something along the lines of:
"I guess I'll just hang myself and go to hell," went into the closet and wrapped a belt around her neck - and couldnt get it off when it latched.
And choked to death without notice or fanfare. Her mother found her later when she was home and none of them could find her, because apparently the 5 year old girl did not go in the closet with her and wasnt aware she really died.
We are all shocked and devestated by it.
Never play at suicide. You may be more effective than you planned.
ups: glad to be alive. glad that my family's alive, and glad that no one in my family is suicidal or just stupid. other than that, totally enjoyed hitting a line drive to right field in a backfield pickup game, surprising the teenaged pitcher who thought I was a wussy old girl.
Another plus was seeing one of the boys my brother teaches sundy school to finally find a sport he enjoys and is good at (baseball). ANOTHER plus was seeing that the getting-to-be-a-habit male bonding that took place at my house this evening included one of the younger boys in my brothers class that is kind of bookish and....uhm...nerdy. Everybody made a great effort to have him play and no one made a big deal that he totally sucked at the sport. Final plus was that all of them let this little 5 year old boy (who had a GREAT arm) hit infield home runs and run every base. Watching the joy on that little guys face as he ran the bases was perhaps the most adorable thing I've seen all year.
you know I was sold when I agreed to pick up pizza for them.
I just hope the White Sox beat the Cubs tonight.
