ueno_station54's Top Whatever of Whenever

Only recently started keeping a favourite films list again so I figured I could share it here as well. Probably won't be writing much (or anything) about any of the films since, if you've read any review I've ever written you'll know they're all exactly the same. No one wants to read that and I don't want to write it. Here goes!

#73. A Nymph of the Waves

Frederick S. Armitage
1900
<1m
It's like 20 seconds.

#72. Center Jenny

Ryan Trecartin
2013
54m
Made me finally accept that I'm trans. Cool movie in its own right too.

#71. Laura

Shūji Terayama
1974
9m
The only good use of breaking the fourth wall.

#70. River of Fundament

Matthew Barney
2014
5h52m
If you're into Barney's bullsh*t, this is the most of it.

#69. Tekkonkinkreet

Michael Arias
2006
1h46
One of the few holdovers from my lists from high school. The music still bonks.

Let the night air cool you off
I like weird sh*t. Seems like a lot of weird sh*t will pop up here. I've already added a couple films to my watchlist. Good start. Seen only Tekkonkinkreet and think I may have heard of the Shuji Terayama film or maybe just Shuji Terayama. Apparently I've also heard of Matthew Barney because I know of the Cremaster Cycle... just didn't recognize the name.

#68. Virile Games

Jan Švankmajer
1988
17m
It's Švankmajer.

#67. Big Drive

Anita Lebeau
2011
9m
Wholesome af.

#66. Duvidha

Mani Kaul
1973
1h23m
a e s t h e t i c

#65. Midori

Hiroshi Harada
1992
56m
On second thought maybe don't watch this one.

#64. Behindert

Stephen Dwoskin
1974
1h36m
D'you kids like home movies and drone music?

Let the night air cool you off
I've still not seen that particular Svankmajer flick, but I'll be sure to remedy that soon enough. The only other one from this set I've heard of is Midori, and I only that I've heard of it because it is on my 10,000 film watchlist on imdb. Duvidha is the most intriguing of the group. "Indian folklore ghost film" are words that make my hipster heart happy.

It is certainly all those things, lol. Though I should mention that its definitely not a horror movie in anyway.

#63. First and Last Men

HUGE

#62. Pas de Deux

#60. The Fighting Fists of Shanghai Joe

Mario Caiano

1h32m
The noise this dude makes is like 10x more iconic than Bruce Lee's

#59. Ballet Mécanique

Dudley Murphy & Fernand Léger
1924
19m
Wild that music like this existed at the time.

Let the night air cool you off
I'm not a huge Norman McLaren fan. Pas de Deux gets credit from me for trying to be something worthwhile, but I don't think it's amazing or anything. Of the handful of McLaren films I've seen, I prefer Neighbors, Lines: Vertical, and the wonderful Blinkity Blank. No McLaren film made my shorts list, but I still have quite a few to watch... someday.

Shanghai Joe is the type of film that I'll eventually get around to and not understand how I could have waited that long to see it... I hope.

Ballet Mecanique is great. Some of those Dadaist films are hit or miss, but this one hits pretty hard. George Antheil did make some wild ass music for this... maybe. Wikipedia tells me the nature of the collaboration is mysterious, which is cool. Either way, film looks good, music sounds good. I dig it.

#58. Inland Empire

David Lynch
2006
3h0m
That Ballet Mechanique remake we were all waiting on.

#57. Goodbye Mommy

Jack Wedge
2019

Kimiyoshi Yasuda
1966
1h24m
An absolute unit.

#54. Cries and Whispers

Ingmar Bergman
1972
1h35m
It has both of those things.

#53. Notre Dames des Hormones

Bertrand Mandico
2015
31m
Greasy.

#52. Donkey Skin

Jacques Demy
1970
1h30
Like the previous film but not greasy.

Nobuhiko Obayashi
2019
2h59m
Easily the worst of Obayashi's last three films (spoilers).

#39. Window Water Baby Moving

Stan Brakhage
1959
13m
It has all four of those things.

Sorry if I'm rude but I'm right
Finally some interesting top. Almost too hipster for its own good. Do you have a Letterboxd account or was I trippin'?

Lifted my username from this.

Let the night air cool you off
I love Suspiria and Window Water Baby Moving. I need to see the Obayashi film soon, because Obayashi is a legend. Wolf House looks terrifying. Sono is another director I desparately need to check out. Melies was awesome, don't think I've seen that one though. Black Christmas is good, but I don't really love it. I could see growing appreciation with rewatches later on, but as far as films where the killer makes phone calls go: The New York Ripper. Black Belt Jones looks fun. I'd love to see Happy Hour, but it takes five happy hours to see it. Notre Dames des Hormones looks like something I'll either love or not get at all. Inland Empire and Cries & Whispers are films that I will eventually see because I got big respect for Lynch and Bergman.

#33. Evil Dead Trap

Toshiharu Ikeda
1988
1h42m
Rips off every big horror movie of the time and beats the bark off all of them.

#32. Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Part III: Rebellion

2013
1h56m
Sh*t's wild.

#30. Breathless

1h30m
No, this has to be the normiest pick on the list.

#29. Noroi: The Curse

Kôji Shiraishi
