Best Movie Ever... the 80s... Round 1

I'm going to speed things up and not wait for the 90s competition to end. Same rules apply here, only difference is that I've surveyed 100 people to find the top 32 movies in the 80s instead of having the forum debate where anything got thrown in. It honestly ached me to see Instinct contest the 90s poll without The Piano or Fargo as candidates.

I didn't really survey. I just picked them myself but I think they're fair.

Just to inform. The winners of every decade from the 20s,30s,40s,50s,60s,70s,80s and 90s will then form the last 8 to compete to decide on the crown for Best Movie.

The 80s

Raging Bull v Parenthood
Ran v Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Fanny and Alexander v The Elephant Man
Once Upon A Time in America v The Princess Bride
King of Comedy v Do the Right Thing
Back to the Future v Cinema Paradiso
Wings of Desire v Amadeus
Raising Arizona v The Empire Strikes Back
Au Revoir Les Enfants v Die Hard
Who Framed Roger Rabbit? v Raiders of the Lost Ark
Airplane! v When Harry Met Sally
Pelle The Conqueror v RoboCop
Tootsie v Field Of Dreams
This is Spinal Tap v Hannah and Her Sisters
Witness v Blue Velvet
E.T. v Glory

I haven't seen all these movies so they're not a personal preference. I'd have put in Henry V, American Werewolf in London, Gandhi, Chariots of Fire and Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure but I haven't seen much praise for those films on the site so I left them out. I think the films above come close enough to pleasing both the movie lovers and the film lovers.

Let the 80s battle begin.

Field of Dreams and Tootsie were very close. By the way, I thought Empire was in the 70's and Jedi was in the 80's?

Star Wars was '77, Empire was '80, Jedi was '83.

The only problem with your survey process is it's going to nominate a whole bunch of movies many people on this particular board haven't seen, even more so as we go back decades. You could put Pelle the Conquere up against Ernest Goes to Camp, and Ernest is going to get the votes because that's what more people have seen.

Anywho...

No Terminator? No Kramer vs. Kramer? Yuck! Oh well; I got my way with the 90s nominations to a ridiculous degree, so I guess I'll shut up now.

As said by someone earlier this choice was made easier by not actually seeing some of the movies in the list. But hey, a poor workman and all that.

Some sadly missed films from the 80's that I have to mention
before the end of this round.

Say Anything, The Abyss, The Thin Blue Line, Midnight Run, Hope and Glory, Evil Dead II, Full Metal Jacket, House of Game, Big trouble in little china, After Hours, Paris,Texas, The Right Stuff, Dernier Combat, Le, The Verdict, Blade Runner, The Thing, blow out, Das Boot, The Shining, The Big Red One, Ordinary People, The Stunt Man

yeah.....too many movies were skipped. it's time consuming to narrow down the best for each decade, i know...but!!!!
and i just hate to see certain movies set side to side in the voting.

instead of comparing and pairing, and narrowing the movies down that way, why can't we just pick our favorite ten then five from each decade?? and then those that get chosen the most are winners.

you've already got this underway, so don't stop just because i have complaints. had to say it though.
