I saw a movie around 1980 (probably MTF) about a woman who has two daughters. This woman is a little bit batty and she drives a late 50's Plymouth. The older daughter is sort of extroverted and she has epilepsy. The younger daughter is the quiet, shy type. The woman tries to make a better life for her two girls, but her eccentricities causes them problems. Towards the end of the movie, her older daughter gets angry at her mother and calls her "Betty the loon" after finding out that some of her high school teachers, who were former classmates of her mother called her that. Does this ring a bell?

Only a guess, because I've never seen the movie . . .
Mermaids (1990)
Not the right year, but you could always be mistaken.
