Re: films being "socially relevant" and good. I think any reasonable person has to agree that they can be both, but also that this added constraint obviously ups the degree of difficulty. That's just the unavoidable result of trying to serve two masters. The question I always ask is: when they have to choose one over the other, which wins out?

I also wonder if everybody's opinions of these things are colored by how frequently they have to put up with it. How often the highest-quality works validate someone's beliefs versus contradict (or even openly mock) them is bound to have an effect on how we think of art-as-rhetoric.
