This is the story of two friends growing up in the 70's. As children, the two friends make a pact to be friends forever. Marina has an unstable family with a father who is not around often and a mother who is addicted to valium. Holly is studious but has an over powering, protective mother. Holly also falls for Marina's brother. This is not something the two friends really talk about although they both kind of know the other one understands. As the two friends grow older they both experiment with drugs etc but it is Marina who continues with the self destructive behaviour. Marina becomes more dependent on Holly. Holly feels trapped in the friendship but the years go by. Holly finally realises how one sided the friendship has become and she gets the courage to do something about it.
