Didn't see it.
I saw that. It's pretty amazing.

I wonder if it will sustain it the second weekend. I know a lot of people who decided to postpone seeing it this weekend just to avoid the lines.

I enjoyed the movie thoroughly, routinely analyze box office numbers, and was quite convinced that The Passion of the Christ would make a great deal of money.

That said, I am completely stunned that it's made as much as it has. The first day take ($26.5 million) was impressive, but not shocking. The weekend haul, however, is nothing short of breathtaking.

I'm in shock. The film's gross is simply unbelievable. Hopefully news like this will cause more devout people to follow Gibson's -- and Newmarket Films' -- lead by taking chances with controversial pictures.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by this. If you mean that it will be remembered, I agree. If you mean that it'll come anywhere near approaching worldwide box office records, I don't.

As it stands now, a film must gross over $157 million domestically (in North America, basically) to even reach the top 100. Even if the film ends up with double its current take here, it still won't crack the top 35.

Internationally, the competition isn't much lighter. A film needs over $600 million (over half a billion, in other words) to crack the top 20 of all-time.

Most "supernova" films (that is, films that open big and taper off relatively quickly in comparison) finish with a domestic total roughly three times of their opening. By that measure, The Passion of the Christ would finish with between $200 and $250 million in North America. Excellent, no doubt. A bonafide blockbuster. But not one of the all-time greats in terms of domestic box office gross. For that, it'd need at least $300 million, if not more.

I think it's got some legs on it, and I think it'll be a massive hit any way you look at it...but it has little to no chance of unsurping box office giants like Titanic, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Star Wars movies, Jurassic Park, or even Spider-Man. In my opinion (and I do not wish to insult you), I think such predictions stem from a heat-of-the-moment excitement generated by the fact that the film has just been released, and is performing excellently at the box office so far. That excitement will inevitably cool down, and what it does we'll be left with a very memorable, profitable film...but not one of the elite grossers of all time, in my opinion.

Yes I agree, I think people in general tend to use phrases such as "the best movie of all time" way too often and if they were given more time, they would probably take back their statement. About the box office performance, I think it calls for an interesting bet - if it was a film about something else I would agree with the numbers analysis but this film touches upon religion and I suspect it can have a real shot at putting up some big numbers. I am not at all surprised by its performance thus far at all (money wise).

That's a fair point. Standard box office prediction models are regularly rendered somewhat suspect by films like this. We need look no further than its performance so far (vastly outpacing even the most optimistic of forecasts, from what I've seen) for evidence of that. Still, as unique as The Passion of the Christ is, it still has to follow some basic box office guidelines, I think, and therefore I think we can determine that it'll make a great deal of money, but will be very hard-pressed to find its way into, say, the top ten highest grossing domestic films of all time.

The film's gross next weekend will provide about as much insight into its eventual total as its first weekend gross, as it'll give us an idea as to how much staying power it has. While it is receiving excellent word-of-mouth, it's also receiving mixed reviews, and though I personally found it very moving, I don't relish the thought of seeing it again.

Time will tell.

That it did so well didn't surprise me one bit actually. Why did it surprise you so much? The stir this film caused before it's release (based on what I see on the Net and on TV over here) was as far as I see it exceeded only by The Lord of the Ring: Fellowship of the Ring and Star Wars: Episode One - The Phantom Menace during recent years. There is this very serious program on swedish TV called Debatt (yes, "Debate") which usually deals with stuff like "the swedish alcohol politics" or "what shall we do with our increasing numbers of homeless people?". Well, recently they devoted half of the program to why The Passion of the Christ received so much attention in America. That was stunning to me. And after the premiere the snowball has grown bigger and bigger and rolls faster and faster. There are several factors contributing to why it is no surprise at all that it is such an enormous instant hit in USA - the opposite, however, would have surprised me very much.

I do agree with you though that it is not a candidate to be a new Gone With the Wind or a new Titanic. The Passion of the Christ is probably a film that everybody just got to see but I would guess that it is not a film that people go and see again and again and again. Also like you I predict a slightly cooler receiving in Europe (I might have to take that back though.... ).

Oh, don't get me wrong; I expected it to be a hit. I expected it to do well. Just not this well. Not $117 million in five days well. Especially considering that religiously-themed entertainment is generally considered a niche market. I naturally assumed that debate and publicity would translate into ticket sales...just not to this degree.

Agreed. I think a lot of people will see it again and again, but I think they'll be offset by people like myself, who, though they enjoyed it, find it too tiring and an experience that might be better lived just once...at least for now.

Come on, man!! It's Mel "Braveheart" Gibson doing a gory high concept adaption of the best known story in the christian world! The width of the attraction spectrum on this one is enormous! 11-year old Billy who loves splatter flicks will go and 81-year old grandma who loves Jesus will bring him so he can get around the R rating. Well, maybe not.. but you know what I mean.

Well, yeah, that's what I meant. It's not a feelgood film or romantic or anything which is a must for a film to be "the film of films".

(I can't believe I am talking so much about a film I have never seen! I'M CAUGHT IN THE HYPE AND CAN'T GET OUT! )

I was poking around on IMDb and noticed that The Passion already has 622 comments. Not bad for less than a week.

I know what you mean, Pid...I guess I just underestimated what a Christian message could do if given a mainstream budget. We don't get many of those, so naturally when one came along, it was hard to gauge. I expected that this film would reveal just how spiritual and religious the American people are at heart, but did not anticipate just how much money we'd collectively fork over to see what we believe in finally depicted with skill and funding.

In other words, most religious entertainment/storytelling is done by and for religious people with a limited budget and an even more limited pool of artistic talent. Apparently there's more hunger for a truly professional retelling of the story of Christ than I -- or more others -- had anticipated.

By the way: Sunday grosses were stronger than expected. The film now holds the record for the largest domestic gross within its first five days of release; $125.2 million.

This movie is like the Pied Piper leading the lemming to their death. It is a misleading and seductive movie and I would have to say that it is the work of the antichrist. I say that because when you see this movie and the effect that it has upon mankind, you will also see an analogy of the deception which will happen in the endtime scenario. Mankind will be seduced and reduced to lemming ready for the slaughter. This movie scares the hell out of me because of the seductive and controlling nature of it. This movie is not about the death of Christ, this movie is about the death of mankind at the hands of the antichrist in the endtime scenario. I would advise you to be very careful in regard to this movie. One other thing, the three main female leads in the movie are three of the top porn stars in Italy, especially Monica Bollucci. Forgive me but I think I mispelled her last name but you get the message.
Take care,

Paranoid much? I would like to know exactly how this film controls someone. Last time I checked, I controlled me. If one is worried about control over the masses, perhaps one should also look at the media, taxes, or perhaps the Soma-like slew of percription "head" drugs that are rampant in the country. Also, what is this endtime scenario you speak of? Judgement day? Death of mankind by the antichrist? This movie is about the crucifixion!! I believe that is the death of Christ, at least that is what I learned in the small amount of Saturday School I attended during the short period of religious zeal my mother went through (yup, I had to go on Saturday, I still think the Catholics had something against cartoons to this day )

Oh that is rich! Lemmings ready for the saughter. Seductive and controlling nature. Controlling how? Will the movie make people riot? Not riot? Please elaborate on this master plan by Mel Gibson the antichrist to take over the world and destroy mankind.

Waiting with bated breath....

You make no sense at all, and none of the female leads are porn stars really. If you hate this film don't make remarks that are nothing short of your biased opinion.
