Best of 2017 (so far)

Tools

I've yet to see any new masterpieces this year or anything I'd rate more highly than 8/10, but we're more than three quarters of the way through the year, "Oscar season" is upon us, and there's a great number of strong films, performances, and filmmaking to appreciate so far. Of the 96 2017 releases I've seen, I've liked 41, so there's quality out there. Increasingly the best films of the year are available rapidly or even initially on streaming services (Endless Poetry and Good Time are the only films in my top 20 you can't legally and easily watch right now at home) and it's worth highlighting those readily accessible movies that may have flown under people's radars. To be updated as the year progresses. Share your picks for as many or as few categories as you feel like below.

Still need to see The Salesman, Graduation, A Quiet Passion, Staying Vertical, and The Lost City of Z, among others already released. I go by US commercial release for year eligibility.

Keep your station clean - OR I WILL KILL YOU
I need to watch some of your top 10 movies of 2017! I've seen 50 so far of the new releases and I thought that was a lot! I'm moderately strict with my rating system but I have many movies above 8/10. No 10s yet though. I feel like this year has been lukewarm thus far. Not many really amazing movies have come out (hoping for Del Toro to change that) and not many horrible ones either. Out of the 50 films I've seen I would give about 75% of them at least a barely positive review and above. Here are my Top 7 so far

1. War for the Planet of the Apes
2. IT
3. Baby Driver
4. Get Out
5. The Big Sick
6. Spiderman: Homecoming
7. Wonder Woman

Really excited for Oscar season!

My city isn't big enough on movies to get some of the smaller films I really want to check out like Florida Project.

Bright light. Bright light. Uh oh.
Since I Am Not Your Negro was nominated for a Best Documentary Oscar last year, you can forget that one.

Welcome to the human race...
Trying to figure out what 2016 movies count as 2017 wide-releases is such a hassle. I never seem to know how many new movies I've actually seen.

Anyway, I figure I can wait until the end of the year before I start posting a full list. It seems like this kind of thread should be saved for the middle of the year and, well, I guess we got that.

Iro's Top 100 Movies v3.0

Mark, my understanding of I Am Not Your Negro's release is that it was "four-walled" (played in just a single theater, either just one time or once a day, in order to meet technical qualifications for Oscar consideration) but not actually released until Feb 3, 2017. Limited release is fine and counts for me, but dropping a movie onto one screen to play at 1pm just to meet some arbitrary AMPAS metric isn't the same thing so IANYN is a 2017 film for me. It first opened for real this year.

Iroquois, I'm nearly 100 movies deep into the year and also looking to note the best performances and film craft on display, more akin to one's personal award choices and more thorough appreciation of the year's movies than just asking for a single favorite movie from the first half of the year so I think the threads serve different purposes. I also planned to just update this as the year progresses, but mid-October has brought a hell of a lot more good movies that are likely to still be there at the end of the year than early June.

Dunkirk and Mother will be there or thereabouts come Oscar season fo sho mo fo's

Make a better place
I'd say I watched 2 decent movies:

Madie

&
Get Out

Other movies I had fun watching:

Lucky Logan
Kingsman
American Made

I might also add Life & Shot Caller

Edit:

If this bad boy (a Cure for Wellness) is considered a 2017 movie then it definitely belongs to my list
