James Bond vs Tarantino

Tools

Director Notes: (4/14/04) Quentin Tarantino recently told SciFi.com that he has talked with Pierce Brosnan about his dream idea of doing a serious, non-comedic adaptation of Ian Fleming's first James Bond novel, 'Casino Royale.' Tarantino's idea is to take the franchise back to its roots, on a much lower budget, for Brosnan's last Bond movie (figuring that after this movie, the franchise is going to restart with a new Bond so they have nothing to lose). Tarantino admits that he is unlikely to get to do this, but it's fun to imagine anyway. Here's hoping he gets to do it.

from Gregs Previews

I cant think of any director living or alive that I would rather have directing and writing a James Bond movie. So to add a little more discussion -- who would you like to see direct?

Too bad it doesnt look very promising, I could just imagine Tarantino talking to Brosnan, and Brosnan nodding his head sheepishly wondering what kind of drugs this guy is on

Ironically, this happened 2 years later. Except with Martin Campbell and Daniel Craig.

Except for the "low-budget" bit, which is what actually could've saved the franchise. Tarantino also never would have hired Craig as Bond. He would've known he wasn't right for the part.

hire me for james bond i can prove my skills of being a 007

A big spy movie/007 fan
I wonder how Johnny depp would do as a 007 agent

My name is James Bond, Captain James Bond.

Get me a bottle of rum, shaken not stirred, and can someone tell me where I can find Captain Barblofeld and his pet monkey?

He was going to shoot it in BLACK AND WHITE!

Too bad he hates EON now. Bond is about places, people, dialogue, tension, danger. The action set pieces are apart of the natural translation to cinema, but if they recaptured the dialogue and atmosphere that the original Fleming novels gave us I would be on cloud nine.

Just make me a Bond film where he goes to one casino/hotel for a night and THATS THE MOVIE.

Johnny Depp has the acting range to do it and he has a certain quality about him in his more serious movies that would translate well to a new James Bond.

It's more onto the director to get the right type of Bond out of Depp. I long ago lost interest in the current Bond films, but if Johnny Depp was given a chance I'd go see them.

At this point we need a more personable and unique Bond, just like Roger Moore was the perfect counter balance to Sean Connery's more terse Bond. Depp would be the right counter balance to Daniel Craig's type of Bond. We need a change to keep the Bond franchise fresh.

I never could get the hang of Thursdays.
Come on, Johnny Depp would be a terrible Bond. So bad that I think they should spread that rumour around just so when the next Bond is announced and it's Idris Elba/ Tom Hiddlestone/ Michael Fassbender/ Damian Lewis/ A trained chimpanzee everyone will breathe a sigh of relief that it isn't Johnny Depp.

In any case, it's probably not a good idea to have a character who has long been criticised for being sexist/misogynist be played by an actor who is currently in the middle of a scandal involving spousal abuse.

The names Potter, Harry Potter.

Foster, are you kidding around with that?

Daniel will have to wear heals with the beautiful women who stars in Bond Films, like Tom Cruise.

Yeah, totally agree. With Depp's current problems no producer worth their beans would hire him as it could cost the picture money in lost revenue. It's too bad that this crap with Depp happened (for many reasons) but also as I think he could have done a much lighter, quirkier Bond...and after Daniel Craig they need to go in a different direction.

i dont see bond and tarantino mixing well tbh.

Also people dont like daniel craig? i thought he was a great fit, though brosnan was bond when i was growing up so i guess he`ll always be bond to me-though i didnt like those bond movies.

johnny depp when he was younger maybe, but i feel like hes a bit too edgy for bond.
i dont like tom hiddlestone/benedic cumberbatch/elba&damian lewis..but michael fassbender would prob be good.

Eh, Bond is like the MCU in that the producers would rather favour a one-size-fits-all house style instead of dealing with especially idiosyncratic directors like Tarantino (just look at what happened with Edgar Wright), so it would never have happened anyway. I think Tarantino could pull off a good stand-alone spy movie - there are certainly plenty of sequences scattered throughout his filmography that suggest a good understanding of how to build the appropriate levels of secrecy and tension.

None of the Bond actors will totally satisfy everyone - even Connery has his detractors.
