Decent Movies "Hurt" by Long Run Times

A Million Ways To Die In The West is what comes to mind first because no comedy should be 2 hours long and I actually think The Dark Knight is a little too long. Incredibles 2 was too long for sure. Basically, any film that supposed to be dumb fun action or comedic that runs longer than an hour and 45ish minutes is too long in my opinion.

The truth is in here
The Big Lebowski, the Back To The Future movies, Sabrina, Amelie, There's Something About Mary, American Graffiti, The Blues Brothers, The Untouchables and Dead Poets Society are some examples of comedies which are longer than 1 hour and 45 minutes, but don't feel overstretched.
Like with all other genres, it's about how well you utilize that running time.

Yeah, I guess you're right. Some movies shorter than that can feel like an eternity. About a month ago I saw 30 minute film that felt like I was there for days.

Welcome to the human race...
I would not consider The Untouchables or Dead Poets Society to be comedies, though.

Some more titles...

Face/Off
The Revenant
Mission: Impossible II
Mission: Impossible - Fallout

I finally thought of one....Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979). That's a film that needs an 'Editor's Cut'....cut say 20 minutes from it and it would be a much tighter film.

Sorry Captain
There are a couple different "cuts" out - (and some say that alternate versions made a difference for them).
I have the "Director's Cut" in my "original crew" collection which is actually a bit longer, but has added scenes that supposedly give the story more cohesion, but over all it's only about 8 minutes longer with a run time of 2 hrs. 8 min. (not including end credits)

The Deer Hunter (1978) 3hr 3min.
The Deer Hunter is one of those films that I sometimes watch from the beginning to the end of the Viet Nam scenes (then lose interest in the rest of the story.)

Not saying that it's bad or anything in it's entirety, just that a few times I've watched the first half as a movie unto itself.

I've also done the same with Full Metal Jacket as I enjoy the first half of boot camp with R. Lee Ermey more than the second half.

I didn't feel the length of Marty, or Casino, but I totally agree regarding The Gangs of New York and I can see an argument for The Aviator.

Disagree with Gangs of New York, I don't mind a historical epic when it has the pacing of GoNW...now the Aviator, Bringing out the Dead perhaps.

For me Spielberg is more guilty of going overlong
  • Close Encounters of the Third Kind (could have trimmed 45 minutes off that one)
  • AI (could have done away with the last half hour)
  • Munich (a half hour too long)
  • Ready Player One (almost twice as long as it needed to be)
  • Adventures of Tin Tin (even though it's less than 2 hours he had barely 90 minutes of story)
  • Minority Report - could have cut half of the main characters little side trips
  • The Terminal - is 128 minutes...if you were trying to make a 50's throwback romance it shouldn't have been 2 hours
  • Lincoln - those last 15 minutes practically ruined the film

...AI (could have done away with the last half hour)
Amen to that! I started out liking that film in the first couple acts, but by the time it was over, spring had arrived and it was already time to mow the lawn

It started off as Spielberg greatest film and by the end it became one of my least favorite films ever. The William Hurt scenes and Haley Joel Osmond in the family were cinematic perfection and they ruined it by turning it into an escapade.

I can't quite remember it in detail, but it should have been shot as a two parter, if Spielberg wanted that much story packed in the movie.

@Siddon I agree with Ready Player One. The end was needlessly stretched. Didn't mind the long fight scene though. Just the bit after the hero finds the final key.

Don't agree on Munich. I think it was an anti-war/anti-violence flick and that it needed to show both the violent acts and the remorse/pointlessness of his actions Eric Bana's character feels.

As for other flicks:
Empire of the Sun could have easily been 30 to 45 minutes shorter.
