Rate that Movie: Once Upon a Time in America
7 for now. Love the technicalities of it but these characters weren't that interesting to justify the lenght (and no not because they're not pleasant, though that would've helped)...
Spoilers below.
10/10 for me. From a craft perspective, it looks, feels and sounds incredible. I can't think of a more beautiful depiction of New York, early 20th century or otherwise, and Morricone's score is one of the greatest ever. As for the story, Noodles is one tragic figure, isn't he? Characters who do not quite fit in to the world they're in and the world they want to be in; in this case, the criminal world and Deborah's, always strike a chord with me, with this one being an iconic example. There's also the shifts in time which are hard to discern from dreams, which I think is more feature than bug, and those moments that leave you with more questions than answers and ultimately show great respect for the audience's intelligence (like what really happened to Max, for example).
Sure, the sexual content is off-putting, but that's kind of the point, isn't it? They didn't make the limo driver walk away in disgust for no reason.
