Matrix PG-13???

Tools

I was informed that The Matrix's rating has been changed to PG-13, at least in Canada. Would someone please confirm this and tell me where I can buy a copy, as I am not quite old enough (16) to purchase R movies?

Beatnickson, if you are not old enough to purchase a film, then maybe you aren't old enough to see it.

He's asking whether the movie's rating was changed to PG13, and if so, where he could buy a PG13 copy of the film. That's not quite the same as trying to find a place that will sell him an R-rated movie.

As for the question, I have not seen anywhere where The Matrix was listed as being rated PG13, so I obviously don't know where you could buy such a video. All I've heard is that the sequels may go for a PG13 rating.

It's funny, when I was under 17, I never had anyone question my ability to see R-rated movies except once. I was carded trying to go see Hellraiser. They wouldn't let us in to that one. But even when I was as young as 13, I had no trouble purchasing tickets to see R-rated movies or renting them at the video store (I didn't purchase pre-recorded movies at the time, so I don't know whether I would've had trouble purchasing said videos.)

I guess, with all the recent attention paid to the marketing of films to minors, there's been somewhat of a crackdown on people under 17 getting their hands on r-rated movies.

Of course, I didn't even like The Matrix, so even if I was still 16, I wouldn't be making an effort to purchase the film.

Have you noticed how things that 10 years ago that would have been 18s (in the UK we have Uc, U, PG (Parental guidance), 12, 15, 18) are now being classed for lower ages. For example, The Three Kings...

When the Iraqi guard shoots the mother in the head and you see the blood explode out the other side. Why the hell is that film a 15? I feel pretty strongly about this as my sister's 15, and I don't want her seeing some of the stuff that 15s contain these days.

My sister turns 18 next week, and there are a lot of things I wouldn't want her to see.

But I think there is a general liberalization of standards over time. It takes more to get an R in the US than it used to, for example. Or things that would guarantee an R-rating in the past will only garner a PG13 today.

The bigger change has happened in US television where boundaries have been pushed and pushed for years. Things that never would've made it on the air (from language to sexual situations to even brief nudity) ten years ago are relatively commonplace now.

I still remember the first time I heard the word "***" on TV. It was on The Simpsons in 1990 (in "Bart the Daredevil"). I was actually shocked to hear that particular word uttered on broadcast television (not offended, but surprised). These days I don't think a day goes by that someone doesn't use that word on US broadcast television.

I was asked about this a couple of days ago at work. I contacted Warner Brothers and they said that The Matrix is currently being reviewed by the MPAA for a possible ratings change. The reason behind the review is so Warner Brothers can advertise The Matrix to a younger audience in hopes of increasing the response for Matrix 2 and 3. If it changes in the U.S., it'll change worldwide most likely. If it doesn't change here, an edited PG13 or PG version distributed by Warner Brothers may be requested by countries on a one-on-one basis. Kind of like how Austin Powers 2 was edited overseas to make the dialogue comply with their censor laws.

I'm from Canada, and Canada does not have the PG-13 rating. We have G, PG, 14A, 18A, R, and A, as far as I know, unless any of that has changed.

When The Matrix came out, I remember it was 14A, cause I just turned 14 to see it in the theater at that time. I don't think the rating would have changed since.

Also, when you say you are not old enough to purchase R movies, since when they do they check your age? I bought R rated movies all the time when I was in high school, and no one asked my age. Is this common?

What good does it do to re-rate the movie now, since's it' been out for 20 years now. Are they going to release it again theatrically?

I like the Canadian system a little more than the American one. It seems to be a little more fine tuned. I wonder how many films get the "A" rating? Probably not many.

In the U.S. IMO many "R" films ought to have a NC-17 rating, so that audiences can anticipate just how rough the film is.

But I've always thought that an "A" rating --for Adult-- would be best used for mature themed films, not for porn or gore.

Yeah, no PG-13 in Canada and the A rating is for adult films only, not theatrical ones.

It's funny, an R-rating in the states can fluctuate in Canada between 14A to R.

It's rare, but each Province can essentially give their own rating to a movie. For example: Deadpool 2 was rated 18A in Ontario & British Columbia and 14A in Alberta & Manitoba.

Also, Quebec has their own rating system: G, 13+, 16+, 18+

As for fluctuation, one movie that was Rated in the US was Conspiracy Theory (1997), but I remember in Canada, back then as a kid, it got a PG rating. So that's an American R, to a Canadian PG, which is probably pretty rare.

As for the A rating, I do not recall any movie in Canada getting an A. It must be a pretty extreme rating.

As for The Matrix, even though I saw it at 14 back then in a 14A theater, in the US, between PG-13 and R, perhaps R is a little more appropriate, mainly because the scene when Lawrence Fishburne gets beat up bad, he gets beat up quite bad, so not sure if that is okay for 13 year olds but maybe.
