Mine has to be the classic "Bullitt" chase. Still packs a tremendous punch!

To Live and Die in L.A. (1985)

Going the wrong way on the freeway Billy Friedkin even outdid his own magnificence under the El in The French Connection, which is saying an awful lot. The chase that is the centerpiece of To Live and Die in L.A. is woefully underrated, as is the entire movie. A great, mean, pessimistic cop flick, man.

After those two, I'd say The Blues Brothers, Freebie & The Bean and The Italian Job as a top five. Bullitt, The Seven-Ups and Vanishing Point would be just off my list there as honorable mentions, and the stuff in the Bourne Identity remake is good too.

I have to agree...Freebie and the Bean was a terrific movie....especially James Caan on the motorcycle (although it was clearly a double)
Good choice!

Not strictly a car chase, but both times the T-1000 goes full tilt after John Connor/T-800 (Truck v Harley/Helicopter v Securicor Van) in Terminator 2,always raises the ol Adrenalin levels.

the rock has quite a good one between nicholas cage in a ferrari and sean connery in a humvee, it's a bit short though.

the end of bad boys when theyre racing the porshe against the whatever the bad guy is driving, a very short 'chase' but an entertaining sequence nonetheless

and whilst it doesnt involve cars, and it's strictly a chase, i feel the chariot race in ben hur deserves a mention.

I have a site at http://www.varaces.com that has a database of every movie with a car chase in it. (Well, not every movie, but I'm working on it).
The best overall chase would have to be Bullitt, simply because it set the standard for so many years. You can see the influence of Bullitt many modern car chases. A close second would be Gone in 60 Seconds(1974). The chase in that movie was just so good, and so long, that it's in a class by itself.
Of course, there's Ronin, which to me is the new Bullitt. It does everything perfectly in the chase scenes.

Lesser known movies wih great chases in them include Army of One, Jade and Taxi.

Mine has to be Ronin and has any one else noticed that in bullitt in the car chase the car loses 6 hub caps?

I haven't seen To Live and Die in LA or Blues Brothers. But I hear the car chase scene in The Matrix Reloaded is supposed to blow every car chase scene ever put on film way out of the water. Mortorcycles, cars, and 24 minutes of the sickest car chase we've ever seen. That's the rumor, and I can't wait!
