Columbia Pictures is bringing Flatliners back to life.
The studio is remaking the 1990 drama, which featured a slew of young rising stars including Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland and was directed by Joel Schumacher, and has tapped Source Code writer Ben Ripley to pen the screenplay.
Laurence Mark, a veteran producer whose recent credits include Julie & Julia and The Lookout, is producing the redo. Further Films, who produced the original, will also be involved.
The 1990 movie, written by Peter Filardi, centered on a group of medical students who bring subject themselves to near-death experiences in order to see if anything lies beyond the big sleep. The members of the group then are revisited by physical manifestations of childhood sins are not sure if what they are facing is real or hallucination.

Flatliners to be remade with Dragon Tattoo director?

Joel Schumacher's brat-pack thriller 'Flatliners' is reportedly set for a remake with 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' director Niels Arden Oplev at the helm.

The director is currently in talks with Sony Pictures over the project, which originally starred Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, Oliver Platt and William Baldwin when it was first released in 1990.

Speaking to Collider, the director said: “Well, there are negotiations going on about that. I don’t know who the hell broke that story. It’s an interesting project and I’m intrigued.

“It’s also quite a challenge because the film that’s already been done was a cult classic. That’s too early to talk about, but it’s definitely exciting. It’s an exciting option that’s being negotiated.”

It emerged back in 2011 that the film was being mulled for a remake, with Ben Ripley, who wrote 'Source Code', being asked to pen the re-jigged screenplay.

The original followed the nightmare which descends on a group of prodigious medical students as they take turns in bringing each other back from the dead in order to see what exists on the other side.

Oplev has just directed his first English language film, 'Dead Man Down', starring Colin Farrell and Noomi Rapace, who starred as Lisbeth Salander in his Swedish language film of 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo'.

It was remade in 2011, directed by David Fincher.
