Tried that once with a Colt 1911 .45. A hot shell casing flew straight up and landed between my shooting glasses and forehead and gave me a little burn.

I just recently got a Beretta 92fs inox and shot it sideways for the hell of it. Basically it is to reduce the recoil for rapid fire.
