You basically got it. Except in certain baseball modes (called Rotisserie, or Roto) there aren't really games, they just tabulate stats all year and you get points for where you rank relative to other teams. That's actually the original mode, but some people play head-to-head, probably mostly because that's what you do in fantasy football.
