Taken

Cant wait to go see this movie when it comes out in theaters! I really like Liam Neeson especially his role in Batman Begins. It looks like we are going to get some really cool fight choreography in Taken.

This movie looks sweet. I am a tad disappointed when I found it was rated PG-13 because this seems like the type of flick that can and should include some truly inventive death scenes. I'll definitely be seeing it though sometime next week.

It came out in many other countries quite some time ago. I live in Florida so it still hasn't been released where I live, though that didn't stop me from watching it via download quite a while ago. All of those that are anxiously awaiting the release of it should not be dissapointed. Here's my two cents on it:

A moderately high 3.5.

While watching Taken, I thought of it as an extremely entertaining popcorn flick. I don't discourage myself from watching spy films, there's just not much out there that stand out among great cinematic achievements with an exception of a few films in the 007 saga, which I'm not a cardinal follower of anyway. That being said, this statement isn't going to mean much, but Taken is one of the best and most entertaining spy films I've seen. I'm not going to say best since I'm sure there's something I'm forgetting. I believe those that are into fast-paced action flicks such as Die Hard should enjoy this one quite a bit.

Liam Neeson is fantastic as usual. This is one of those films in which an actor really carries the film on his shoulders. If not for Neeson, the characterization of the ex-spy would not have been nearly as convincing. Bryan Mills, the character Neeson portrays, is one of the best bad asses you'll ever lay your eyes on. Many of the actions he does in the film are very slick and always very cool. The ending comes to mind:
WARNING: "Taken ending" spoilers below
Mills points his gun at a man who is threatening his daughter's throat with a knife. The man holding his daughter at knife point is trying to negotiate with Mills while the whole time Mills is just lining up the man for a headshot.
His lines are also flawlessly and much of the time quickly delivered. The rest of the performances I thought were mediocre, nothing special, though nothing bad either.

It does have some unbelievable action stunts that will most likely satisfy many Stallone and Schwarzenegger followers, though may disappoint some stern austere film goers. It's not to be listed among the most realistic films out there, and I'm afraid that many critics will pan it for that. Though, it is undoubtedly one of the funnest films to come out as of late (at least from what I've seen). It will assuredly suit the tastes of the action/thriller goofs out there.

EDIT: Additionally, the fight choreography is very convincing and extremely well done.

“I don’t know you who you are. I don’t know what you want. If you’re looking for a ransom, I can tell you, I don’t have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills acquired over a very long career in the shadows, skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that will be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don’t,
I will look for you, I will find you. And I will kill you.”

With these chilling words to a member of a band of kidnappers, former government operative Bryan Mills begins the longest 96-hours of his life – and the hunt for the fearsome organization that has taken his daughter Kim.

Mills had only recently given up his government career as what he calls, a “preventer” – “I prevented bad things from happenings,” he says – to be near Kim, who lives with Bryan’s ex-wife Lenore and her new husband. To make ends meet, Bryan joins some former colleagues for special security details (like guarding a pop diva), but most of his time and energy are spent re-connecting with Kim.

Bryan’s familial goal is nearly derailed when Kim requests his permission to spend time in Paris with a friend. All too aware of the dangers that could lie ahead for Kim in a foreign land, Bryan says no, but Kim’s disappointment leads him to very reluctantly relent.

Bryan’s worst fears are realized when Kim and her friend Amanda are suddenly abducted – in broad daylight – from the Paris apartment at which they’ve just arrived. Moments before Kim is dragged away by the as yet unseen and unknown assailants, she manages to phone Bryan, who begins to expertly piece together clues that will take him to the darkness of Paris’s underworld, and to the City of Light’s plushest mansions. He will face nightmares worse than anything he experienced in black ops – and let nothing and no one stop him from saving his daughter.

Taken finally hits U.S. theaters this Friday.

I thought I remembered an earlier thread about this movie... but when I did a search, it didn't show up... might have been a glitch due to the upgrade (?)... I don't have time to search for it now but if you run across it, why don't you post the link in here?

Here is the link, it's not much of a thread though.

I got the impression from the TV ads that the bad guys are just criminal types, kidnappers. So if it's a gang of smash-and-run boys, and daddy is an ex-spy, does it still qualify as a "spy" movie?

Neeson's roles and performances are usually believeable. I'm less than enthused about movie stunts and fight choreography. I'll take a taut plot and smart dialogue over all that dancing around. For instance, the scene you described in the spoilers aside sounds very much like a scene I saw in a TV series a few nights ago and have already forgotten where or when. It wasn't all that new even then.

The main attraction about this film, as far as I'm concerned, is that I like that tried and true plot element where a bunch of bad guys mistakenly pick on the wrong person. They get away with it for awhile but then the antagonist starts cleaning their plow. But I like it best when it's done with some imagination, deliberation, and style as in Bad Day at Black Rock or Valdez is Coming, or the original Get Carter rather than the by-the-numbers mayhem of, say, Die Hard.

The scene in the trailer where he's talking on the phone to the kidnapper....brilliantly done.

Rufnek, are we picking on Die Hard again?!
While in America i saw an trailer for it and it was like a five minute chunk from the movie of him talking to the captors, it was the best movie advertisment i have ever seen.

It's pretty good. I don't remember what I rated it in the movie tab awhile back but it was entertaining. Luc Besson helped write it so that's a plus for fans of his. It's been available online for several months so get watching kids!

One man for the job but the right man
Just saw the movie a few days ago. This movie is one of the greatest movies I have ever seen. So many action packed scenes and the way the stunts are done is brilliant. I recommend this movie to all action movie fans out there! You will love it!

Good, but not great. I liked it, though.
