It was actually released in theaters in 2000
We must stick to something fixed. I suggest this to be Wikipedia+IMDB+RYM. All they pin it for 1999.

The release of a movie is something floating and depends on the market in a certain country.

The trick is not minding

I get it, but what determines that exactly? The first time it was shown in a film festival? Often, a film will be shown at a festival but isn’t distributed to theaters for the masses until the following year, such As this example. But if we go by theatrical release, which country do we go with, since even then that won’t match the same year? Mass confusion.

Profile was finally released this year in theaters (I went to see it) after first being shown in a festival 2 or 3 years ago.

In conclusion, probably is safer to go with when it was first shown in a festival.

But I'm a Cheerleader was initially released in 1999 at TIFF, and then received a wide release in the summer of 2000. For most intents and purposes, it is a 1999 release and it is listed as such in most platforms, but I guess that's up to whoever's setting up this.
