Kidnapped child by a woman

I'm looking for movie from 90's or 2000's. The film is set in the 19th century and there was a man and a woman (marriage) who had a little child. Unfortunately, but later another woman attacked their house. The woman killed the man's wife and kidnapped the child (I remember a carriage with a horse), and the man probably later looked for the kidnapped child.

Somebody knows?

Maybe big city, but it was England. There are something like times of whalers.

Was this an English language film?
In what way was the man's wife murdered? (Was she shot?,...strangled?,.....???).
Was the kidnapped child a daughter, or a son?

Yes, it was English language film and 19th century. The woman was kidnapper and she killed (maybe shot) wife of man, then she kidnapped a child. I don't know whether kidnapped child was a daughter os a son.
